|1-Not that we like to admit it, but it's the... |2-Bugs & Fixes |1-...in issue 8 of The Word. by Freak of NFA Oooh, I hate this bit, it's where I own up to all the buggettes and un- documented features in The Word issue 9. Oh well, let's get it all over with shall we? |1-Pause-O-Rama Yes, the mag still freezes as AMOS Pro tries to sort out a load of strings, this bug has been with us since issue one, sorry! Somebody on the .net said "Don't Use Strings", unfortunately I can't think of another way round this problem just yet, I'll keep you posted. The freezing is a lot less apparent if you have Fast RAM... |1-Mouse Pointer Freeze During loading the mouse pointer changes to a disk and freezes or moves very jerkily while the disk is accessing. I'm told by Budda/NFA that AMAL can't continue to animate objects while DMA-intensive operations are done, like disk-access. The mouse pointer changes to an egg-timer while the article is being formatted, and this is because of another DMA task conflict. Limiting the number of lines formatted in every frame helps this at the obvious expense of formatting speed, but to be honest you hardly notice it anyway... :) Oddly enough, we fixed it for a couple of seconds, but then we couldn't access disk 1, and when we re-compiled it the bug had returned! |1-Bar Graphics Fixed After a couple of comments about the new graphics for the control bar, it seemed that not everyone thought they were lovely, and so what I've done it taken the Word 5 bar with Word 7 Gadgets, but I've revamped just about everything into the bargain. Now it's in a more modern (and positively Greek-ish) font with much better graphics than before. Also the graphics bar is now double-buffered so it won't flicker every now and again when you click on it, nice little touches... |1-Disk Requesters Quitting the magazine does not - yet - bring up a requester asking for you to confirm your choice, however you'll be prompted to insert any disks that are not available with another groovy requester, and if you're running from HD you won't need any assigns either! See the "HD Install" article for more details. Quitting now fades off though... |1-RAM Usage... The RAM overheads for The Word 9 are lower than previously, I've simply rearranged a few operations to run a lot more smoothly, you'll notice that the decrunched file is approx 100k bigger, but the actual memory needed is lower, swings and roundabouts style of fing. ------------- If you find a bug, don't tell the world - tell me! ^27^^220 DiCK - P.O.Box 42 - Grimsby - South Humberside - DN33 1RY -------------
