ALWAYS turn your Amiga off for 60 seconds and on again before you insert a write-enabled disk. And please note that if you use 5.25" disks, DO NOT use transparent tape for write-protection, use a black one! The best way: Use our virus killer disk "The New Superkillers" and send it to your swap friends. DON'T swap with lazy guys who send you virus infected disks more than one time. We can all make mistakes, but half-brains like that should NEVER get programs from us! 6. Specifically for harddisk owners =================================== Remember that all executable programs are IMPLODED. If you will use some of the programs on your harddisk, you have to deplode the programs by using Imploder (or copy the "explode.library" into the LIBS: directory on your harddisk and reboot). 7. About the programs ===================== This chapter should not be looked upon as full documentation to the programs on this disk, but rather as small hints and explanations to programs where it might be needed. The full documentation is to be found in the directory that the program resides in, or the directory "DOCS" if it is a C-command. **************************************************************************** DCopy....................................Disk 1 Developed as a result of inadequate copying programs, this disk copier should be the only one in your collection! With an "X-Copy" style of appearance and a feature for checking bootblocks for viruses BEFORE copying, DCopy is far superior...and non-commercial! A D-MOB Release. **************************************************************************** Degrader.................................Disk 2 Author: Chris Hames; non-commercial You upgrade your system and what happens? The idiots who wrote your favorite program didn't follow the guidelines and it no longer works. This is where Degrader comes in: it will try to degrade your system so that the old brain dead program will work on your machine. You can also just use it to boot off floppy drives other than DF0:, force your machine to PAL or NTSC, turn the audiofilter on or off and other things. **************************************************************************** DirWork..................................Disk 1 Author: Chris Hames; $35 suggested contribution The diskmaster of the future! A highly intelligent file editor that analyzes filetypes when you're double-clicking with the left mouse button on their names. If it's a picture, it will show it. A sound, it will play it. And so on, and so on, and so on... Furthermore, we, SAFE HEX INTERNATIONAL, have included LHA, ZIP, and UNZIP in the c: directory. So if you're dealing with archives ie, files downloaded from a BBS), just double-click the left mouse button to see what's in the archive and double-click the right mouse button to unarchive it. The destination will be the path that you have in the other file window. Let me put it another way: If you try to unarchive a .LZH, .LHA, or .ZIP file from the left file window, the unarchived files will be placed in the right file window. PLEASE NOTE: The default configuration for DirWork uses "LZ" instead of "LhA". Please read the directions to custom configure the program to suit your needs. The other option would be to rename "LhA" in the C: directory to "LZ". NOTE: LHA is SHAREWARE. IF YOU USE IT, PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND A DONATION! **************************************************************************** DiskSalv v2..............................Disk 1 Author: Dave Haynie; $10 basic registration DiskSalv is a "Disk Salvage" program. It can recover data from a disk in severe trouble, it can fix a good portion of disk problems directly on the problem disk, and it can locate valid partitions on a disk with an unknown layout or damaged rigid disk block. It supports all AmigaDOS file systems through 3.0. The included "Cheap" manual details the basic functions available, while the semi-commercial manual covers every little detail, theory of operation, and other good stuff. **************************************************************************** FixDisk..................................Disk 2 Author: Werner Guenther, FREEWARE FixDisk is a program to recover as much as possible from a defective disk. I don't claim it is better than Diskdoctor or DiskSalv, but it has some features the others don't have: It can recover damaged (unreadable) tracks. It has functions to check file integrity, to check the directory structure and functions to undelete, copy or show (even defective) files and fix corrupted directory pointers. A damaged file structure can be recovered copying the data file by file to another disk (a la DiskSalv) or can be fixed in place (like Diskdoctor). Everything can be selected with an intuition interface, so users can determine what action should be take place. Now the bad news: The program does not keep track of loose blocks, those files without a file header, as DiskSalv does. It doesn't process partitions > 48Mb. **************************************************************************** Imploder.................................Disk 1 Authors: Peter Struijk and Albert J. Brouwer; FREEWARE Imploder is a program similar to PowerPacker (see below) with a few exceptions. Unlike PowerPacker, Imploder only handles executable files 9not text files). Imploder also has a feature to "library implode" files, taking advantage of the "explode.library" and thus enabling programs to load faster. SHI uses this program to crunch all executable files for the best compression rate (except for smaller files, which are crunched better with PowerPacker). In a nutshell, this program takes any executable program of size "x" and compresses it to a smaller size, while still keeping its original integrity. I guess that by doing this you could get 1.5 disks' worth of information onto one disk...this is why SHI uses this program faithfully! **************************************************************************** MessyFileSystem (Amiga -> PC)............Disk 2 Author: Olaf Rhialto Seibert; Money contribution expected Olaf Rhialto Seibert, a born idealist: With a generous mind, he has created a SHAREWARE version of CrossDOS, "only better", to use his own words. For those who don't know how CrossDOS works, I'll give a short summary: By pressing the "MOUNT DIx:" icons in Workbench you'll get a device that acts precisely like an IBM-PC 720k drive!!! This means that you can transfer all sorts of files from an Amiga to a PC and reverse. For example, you download a PC program with your Amiga (if it's ZIPped you can even unzip it on the Amiga!) and then you just save it to DIx:...then you have a fully usable PC program in a PC disk format! Another example: You have written an essay on your Amiga and want to print it with a PC. Action: You just put in a PC-Formatted disk in a mounted DIx: and save it directly from your favorite word processor as an ASCII file! IMPORTANT: When you press the MOUNT icon you will, after a short while, get a requester telling you that it's NOT A DOS DISK IN UNIT x. This is quite harmless. The small script file is looking for a PC-DOS disk in the appropriate unit. If there is no such disk you will get this requester. Just thing of it as confirmation that the drive has been properly mounted and press CANCEL. By pressing the PC-format icon, you will get instructions to format a PC disk with your Amiga. MessyFileSystem consists of: l/messyfilesystem devs/messydisk.device devs/mountlist & mountlist.messyORG sys:messyfmt Furthermore, KickStart 1.2 and 1.3 users NEED to run c/TDPATCH1213 to get the messyfilesystem to work properly (this is done already in the Startup-Sequence) **************************************************************************** NewZAP...................................Disk 2 Author: Dallas J. Hodgson; $15 donation suggested NewZAP is a multi-purpose file sector editing utility. If you've ever had the need to alter just a few bytes within a file, examine its binary and ASCII representations, or search for key sequences of digits or characters, NewZAP will make your hacking life a little bit easier. It does what text editors were not meant to do; precise position-oriented object modifications. NewZAP will run from CLI or Workbench under 1.1 or 1.2 KickStart with or without FAST RAM. **************************************************************************** PCTask (Demo)............................Disk 2 Author: Chris Hames; Shareware (presumed), $35 USD, $40AUD Even though the Amiga range of computers are excellent, the world PC market is still dominated by IBM PC's. So you might want to run some programs written for the IBM PC but don't want to buy another computer. This is where PC-Task comes in, it allows you to run the majority of IBM PC programs on your Amiga computer and hence make use of the memory and peripherals you already have. The speed of PC-Task is directly related to the speed of you Amiga so when you make your Amiga faster your PC emulation becomes faster. Multitasking is what has set the Amiga apart from other PC's and PC-Task works fully without taking over the machine. PC-Task just becomes another application screen that you switch to when wanted. **************************************************************************** PowerPacker..............................Disk 2 Author: Nico Francois; Shareware, $20 PowerPacker is a userfriendly command and data cruncher, this means a menu driven utility that can crunch almost any file on your disks. It can be started from the CLI or the WorkBench, just type it's name in the CLI window or doubleclick it's icon. PowerPacker will detach itself from the CLI so you can close the CLI window. Apart from crunching, you can also recrunch files that were crunched by most other crunchers. NOTE: This is the FINAL shareware release of PowerPacker. Any versions released after this one are COMMERCIAL and can be obtained through the author (I have the US address for those interested). The latest commercial version is 4.0a--later versions have been found but the author claims he has not released anything after v4.0a. **************************************************************************** PowerPackerPatcher (PPPatcher)...........Disk 2 Author: Michael Berg; Shareware, $5+ Ever get tired of having to use PPMore or equivalent to view all those Powerpacked datafiles you have scattered everywhere? Or maybe PPMore doesn't do exactly what you want? Does your favourite ANIM player support Powerpacked anim-files? No? Well, this program should solve all your problems. It makes PowerPacker datafiles act completely as if they were normal files. In fact, with this program up and running, there is not one thing you can do with normal files, which you cannot do with Powerpacker datafiles. Regardless of what programs you are using. **************************************************************************** QED......................................Disk 2 Author: Darren M. Greenwald; Shareware, $20 QED is a very fast, full featured text editor for the Amiga written in Manx C, and 68000 assembly language. QED offers a variety of options which allow you to customize how each text editing window behaves. For example, QED has a free-form text editing mode which allows you to place the cursor anywhere on a line, and spaces are automatically inserted as needed. Or if you prefer, QED can behave like a sequential file editor limiting cursor positioning to the end of a line. And there's more...but read the QED_Intro.Doc file to get the rest! **************************************************************************** ReOrg (2 versions).......................Disk 2 Author: Holger Kruse; Shareware, $10 ReOrg is a disk optimizer, i.e. a program that improves the physical data layout on a floppy disk or harddisk, in order to speed up file and directory accesses. Two versions are included: The current KickStart 2.0-and-higher version in a drawer, and version 1.1 (for KickStart 1.3 and lower) in the C: directory. You must access the older version through the CLI. **************************************************************************** SnoopDos.................................Disk 1 Author: Eddy Carroll; Freely Distributable Have you ever wondered why a particular program won't seem to run? It could be looking for some special files which you've forgotten to install in the appropriate place. SnoopDos was designed to let you resolve situations like this, though it's probably useful for other things too. **************************************************************************** SysInfo..................................Disk 1 Author: Nic Wilson; Shareware, $20.00 USD or $25.00 AUD suggested Sysinfo is an Amiga Sytem Information program. It interrogates the Amiga and determines types of hardware, software, modes, speed etc. Users have found it very useful for determining correct operation of an Amiga before purchase and that the unit actually contains hardware that they are paying for, without having to open it up. It is under constant revision, and these revisions are available from the author at any time. **************************************************************************** WorldTime................................Disk 2 Author: Jonathan Potter; Freely Distributable WorldTime is a clock with a difference. It can show you the time in any city in the world, with 84 cities displayed at once. Changed to the program is the actual city of the SHI Regional Virus Center where this disk came from. If you want to call and are unsure of the time, please use this program! Normally calls are not accepted after 21:00 (9 PM) in most regions. **************************************************************************** There are also some other programs included on these disks, such as LhA, Zip, UnZip, and TDPatch1213. Appropriate documentation for these files is located in the "DOCS" directory of the disks. One more thing--The only available printer driver is EpsonX which is, in SHI's opinion, the most commonly used. If YOU use another driver, just copy this to DEVS/PRINTERS and use the program PREFERENCES from your Workbench disk to change the printer-configuration. 8.
