Future stuff: - AREXX interface. - Checking of WARP files. - Wildcards for downloading. - Full screen editor for message base ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Section 2 - Setup ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First you will need the following programs for the AmiExpress package: EXPRESS.WRP <-- A sample AmiExpress BBS setup. EXP.ZOO <-- The newest version of AmiExpress. ARP.ZOO <-- Install the AmigaDOS Resource Project version 1.3. CONMAN.ZOO <-- Amiga replacement console device, used by the BBS. CANCEL.ZOO <-- Cancels requestors for remote shell use, prevents those requesters from locking your BBS. SETBEEP.ZOO <-- A utility that allows the screen flash to use an IFF sound instead of flashing the screen. END.ZOO <-- Files required to exit the Remote shell. CONFIG.ZOO <-- The newest version of the configuration program. UTILS.ZOO <-- Some utils for AmiExpress including a userbase packer, external user editor, directory lister. AM21.ZOO <-- Amimodem, this is only good if you have an HST or Dual Standard. First of all lets start with the setup stuff. Unarchive all of the programs above and have them handy. 1> Run Arpinstall to install ARP onto your system, if you don't have it already installed. 2> Install Conman, if not already installed, the docs are included. 3> Install the AUX device onto your system, docs included with WB 1.3 4> If you have an HST or DUAL Standard run Amimodem, at this time. Now your ready to start setting up the BBS. Create a directory called 'BBS' on some device (DF0:, DH0:, etc) where you want the BBS to be located. Now you must assign the BBS so that AmigaDOS knows where it is. For example if you put all the BBS related files in a directory called 'BBS' on 'DH1:', then you must 'ASSIGN BBS: DH1:BBS'. First copy the files 'express' and 'config' from exp.zoo and config.zoo respectively to BBS: Now type the following from a CLI: 1> CD BBS: <-- changes the current directory to BBS:. 1> CONFIG BBS:CONFIG1 <-- runs the config program to set up the bbs. You now should be in the heart of AmiExpress, the config utility. This config utility was made to maximize the sysop control over the BBS and will constantly be changing to give the sysop more control. There are currently 3 screens (shown below) use the menus at the top, with the right mouse button, to go from screen to screen. The first screen allows you to change the minimum security level needed to access a command. Toggle a few sysop preferences on/off. Set up the opening baud rate the BBS will initilize at. (Normally 0) Init Baud - The highest baud rate your modem can achieve based upon what the serial device is capable of. Under Location of Conference on HD, put the actual path you want the conference to be under on the Hard Drive or Floppy. Presets - This is for account editing. There are currently 6 different preset sets you can have. The first set is used for new users. When a user first logs onto your BBS they will have the levels in preset 1. NOTE: Due to the editor using the '1' key for saving, all the presets in the editor are +1. ie. if you want to make a user have the stats you stored in 3, you would hit 4 while editing them using the account editor. Access Level - This is the users security level Ratio Type - This determines the type of Ratio a user has. 0=Byte Only, 1=File and Byte, 2=File only Ratio (X:1) - This is the users actual ratio. Daily Bytes - This is the maximum amount of bytes a user can download per day, providing they haven't exceeded their ratio. Conf Access - Wherever you place an "X" corresponds to a conference. There are 9 spaces, 1 per conference. Place an "_" in those conferences which you do not want the user to have access to. NOTE: This part IS case sensitive!! You must use a capitol X for the conferences you want the use to have access to. Time (Secs) - This is the daily time limit you allow the user in seconds. Modem Init - This is the string that is sent to the modem upon starting up the BBS. Check your modem manual for the meanings of the default string, you may want to change some settings. Reset - This is the string that is sent to the modem after a user logs off the BBS. Ring - This is the string sent to the modem when the BBS detects a call. Usually RING. Answer - The command you give your modem to make it answer. Usually ATA. Connect Messages Enter the messages you want the modem to send upon connection at the specified baud rate. Usually the defaults are correct, consult your modem manual for more information on these. After you have edited all the information and are satisifed with it, select GENERATE from the top menu items with the right mouse button and the config program will make all the necessary directories the BBS needs to run in the specified location. Now save the config using the save option with the filename "Config1" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Section 3 - Parts of AmiExpress BBS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Below is a list of ALL Text files that the bbs uses and their descriptions. These files go in BBS: AMI_DRIVES <-- This file tells AmiExpress what logical devices to use for the bbs, edit it to your needs. The last drive listed is the drive where the uploads will go when someone uploads a file. GUESTLOGON.TXT <-- This is the file that is first displayed to a new user. GUESTLOGON.TXT.GR <-- This is the file that is first displayed to a new user if ANSI graphics are selected. JOIN.TXT <-- Text file displayed just before filling out the first board application. JOIN.TXT.GR <-- ANSI version of above. JOINCONFERENCE.TXT <-- Text displayed when option J is chosen from the main menu. JOINCONFERENCE.TXT.GR <-- ANSI version of above JOINED.TXT <-- This file is displayed after the first board application has been filled out. JOINED.TXT.GR <-- ANSI version of above. LOCKOUT-0.TXT <-- Displays this message when a user has a security level of zero (0) before logging them off. LOCKOUT-0.TXT.GR <-- ANSI version of above. SYSTEMSTATS <-- This file contains the number of callers your system has had since starting up. SCRIPT <-- This is a text file of questions you can ask a user before giving them access. Use "~" to wait for input (See Appendix C) ANSWERS <-- The output of the SCRIPT file goes here. TEMPANS <-- The last users application is stored here. BBSHELP.TXT <-- The text file displayed when a user selects option H. BBSHELP.TXT.GR <-- The ANSI version of above. The following files may go in either BBS: and/or BBS:{CONF PATH} BULLX.TXT <-- Will display a bulletin for the specific security level, works just like MENUX.TXT or MENUX.TXT.GR (See below) BULLX.TXT.GR <-- ANSI version of above. If the BULLX.TXT files appears in BBS: EVERYONE who logs in will see it, if you put the BULLX.TXT files in a particular conference only those people who join/auto-rejoin that conference will see it. The Following files go in the indivdual conference path. NDIRS <-- This is a file containing the # of file directories you have in a particular conference. Make it 0 to have no files in that conference. PATHS <-- This file tells the BBS the actual paths to search (where to look) for files when someone goes for a download. MENUX.TXT <-- The menu set for the user with the sec level in X for example, menu20.txt is for a level 20 user. MENUX.TXT.GR <-- ANSI graphics menu set. FILEHELP.TXT <-- The file that is displayed when a user selects F from a menu prompt FILEHELP.TXT.GR <-- ANSI version of above UPLOADMSG.TXT <-- File that is displayed just before an upload UPLOADMSG.TXT.GR <-- ANSI version of above. DIRX <-- The actuall file listing, if you have NDIRS set to 3 then you should have DIR1, DIR2, DIR3. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Section 4 - Running the BBS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By now you have edited the text files or are going to use the default menus, bulletins, etc. You have generated your conferences now to run the actuall BBS. Go to a CLI and type what you see below: 1:> CD BBS: <---------- Sets the Current directory to BBS: 1:BBS> Stack 75000 <---- Changes the stack of the CLI needed for the BBS operation use at least 50000! 1:BBS> Run Express BBS:CONFIG1 3 0 0 640 200 Let me explain the last line above...... The bbs uses the file that the config program saves (Config1). The syntax for the bbs is: EXPRESS filename [BITPLANES] [LEFTEDGE] [TOPEDGE] [WIDTH] [HEIGHT] | | | | | | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\of BBS screen | Number of bitplanes (0-4, 0 is workbench; optional) | default is 8 color on its own screen or 3 bitplanes. | filename that you saved in config (usually config1) Experment with the options till you find one you like. Now, you are at the BBS main Sysop station: the following options are available: NOTE: The very FIRST time you (the sysop) login you MUST use the local login command (F2), NOT sysop login. This is so you are listed as the first user in the userlog. If you are not the first user in the userlog, when users use the 'C' command for, comment to sysop, you will never get the mail. F1- Sysop login Sysop login will let the sysop login to the BBS. The sysop does not have to enter his user name or password. Sysop login is like local login but it always logins in the FIRST user in the userlog. F2- Local login Local login lets ANY user login locally. It acts like you called the BBS from a remote location. NOTE: The very FIRST time you (the sysop) login you MUST use this option, not sysop login. F3- Edit users accounts Edit users accounts lets you change everything about a user. Name- The name the user uses to login to the BBS B. Location- Where the user is from C. Pass- Users password D. Phone Number- users phone number E. Ratio- Users upload/download ratio, if the ratio is: 0- The user has no upload/download ratio 4- The user must upload every 4 files/bytes or both. F. Conference Access - Put an "X" in conferences you want the user to have access to, Place a "_" where you don't want them to have access to. G. Ratio type- If the ratio type is: 0- It runs on a BYTE only system (See above) 1- It runs on BOTH a BYTE and FILE system (See above) 2- It runs on a File only system (See above) H. Sec_Level- This is the users security level I. Uploads- The number of uploads the user has made J. Autorejoin- The conference number the user will automatically enter upon loging on the next time K. Downloads- The number of downloads the user has made L. Messages Posted- The number of public messages the user has left M. Bytes Uled- The total number of bytes the user has uploaded N. Mail_Sent- The number of private messages the user has sent O. Bytes Dled- The number of bytes the user has downloaded P. Mail_Received- The number of private messages the user has received Q. Byte Limit- The daily byte limit the user has R. Time_Limit- The number of seconds of time per day the user has S. Time_Used- The number of seconds the user has used for that day ESC=NO_SAVE- This will get you back to the bbs after editing an acccount, press ESC then return. 1=SAVE- Saves the information you changed use this then ESC to return to bbs 2-7 PRESETS- Use this to edit a user to a preset account setting 9= RE-ACTIVATE- This will reactivate an inactive (deleted account) DEL=DELETE- This will delete the current account F4- Remote login Remote login lets someone connect on to the BBS with out hanging up. Lets say you are talking with a friend on the BBS phone line. You tell him you have a great new program for him to try out. Normally you would have to hang up the phone and he would have to call the BBS. With remote login all you have to do is push F4 and all he has to do is type 'ATD' on his terminal program and he will be connected to the BBS. This saves long distance phone charges since the first minute is the most expensive. F5- New Shell Pressing F5 opens a Shell ON the BBS screen. This acts just like a Shell on the WorkBench screen. The Shell will be opened with the same number of bit planes as the BBS was. This is useful for checking eight or sixteen color ANSI graphics. You can design ANSI graphics in eight or sixteen colors and use the 'type' command to display the file in this shell. F7- Toggle Chat (self explainatory) F8- Reprogram Modem (Sends the Reset string in the Config file) F-9 Exit BBS (Exits the BBS to AmigaDOS) F-0 (10) This will exit the BBS and put the phone off hook (busy). This is useful when you want to quit the BBS, and do not want people calling. Like when you need to boot a program for testing. Any text files that are printed are noted in parenthes. ? - Show menu (MenuXX.txt OR MenuXX.txt.gr) B - Bulletins (Bullhelp.txt OR Bullhelp.txt.gr) C - Comment to Sysop D - Download file(s) (Resume is automatic) E - Enter mail F - List files (Filehelp.txt OR Filehelp.txt.gr) G - Goodbye (logoff.txt OR logoff.txt.gr) H - Help with bbs (bbshelp.txt OR bbshelp.txt.gr) J - Join a conference (JoinConference.txt OR JoinConference.txt.gr) M - ANSI graphics on/off N - New files or list files since a date O - Operator page, chat OPEN - Support for DOORS (COMMING SOON) R - Read mail S - Print your stats T - The current time U - Upload a file (Resume is automatic) (UploadMsg.txt OR UploadMsg.txt.gr) V - View a text file W - Write your stats X - Toggle expert (menus) on/off Z - Zippy file search SYSOP COMMANDS A - Account editor D S - Download sysop (see explaination below) VS - View Sysop allows someone with sysop access to view any file on the system (ex. vs bbs:callerslog will display the callers log) Y - Remote shell (S:Remote-Startup) Detailed Descriptions ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ? - Shows the menu again B - Bulletins When b is pressed you will get a listing of available bulletins (Bullhelp.txt OR Bullhelp.txt.gr (NOTE: The BULLhelp.txt(.gr) files go in BBS:Conf/Bulletins/ NOT in BBS:) from here you can select which bulletin to view. The Bulletins go in BBS:CONF/BULLETINS/ and they are text files in the format BullX.txt or BullX.txt.gr where X is the bulletin number, there is no limit to the number of bulletins you can have C - Comment to Sysop Comment to Sysop is a private message to the Sysop. When you press 'c' the BBS will fill in 'To:' with the Sysops username, and you will be asked for a title for the message. See the mail section below on how to use the editor. NOTE: Comment to Sysop leaves private mail to user number one (1). If you (the Sysop) are not getting your private mail you are not user number one in the userlog. See the NO MAIL section under problems for help. D - Download file(s) When d is pressed file infomation about the users is printed, and the user is ask to enter filenames for downloading. Infomation like: upload/download ratio (in files and bytes), and the number of downloads remaining are printed. The prompt contains the number of files you can download and the time remaining. At the prompt enter the file name you are looking for. You can use spaces to separate filenames for multiple entries on that line. When you enter a filename the BBS searches for the file. If it finds the file it will print size of the file and the time it will take to download it. If it does not find the file it ask for a replacement file. Once you have entered all the files you want to download pressing return by itself on the filespec prompt will let you continue. The next prompt you get will ask you to press return to start the transfer, A for abort, and G for goodbye after transfer. Abort will exit you back to the main menu prompt. Goodbye after transfer will hang up after the transfer is done. You can also enter filenames separated by a space right from the main menu. For example at the main menu prompt you can type; 'd filename1 filename2'. *** We will soon have wildcard downloading. You will be able to enter a filename like 'file?' and it will get all files that start with 'file' and have any character at the end. Also you will be able to enter 'f*' to download all files that start with 'f'. *** SYSOPS can download from any where with the 'd s' command. For example to download the startup-sequence you would type 'd s s:startup-sequence'. E - Enter mail When you press 'e' you well be ask who the message is going to be to. You can enter a users name or press return for the message to be to ALL. You will then be asked the subject of the message. To abort the message press return alone on the subject line. Next you will be asked if you want the message to be private. If you just return or enter 'n' the message will be public, if you enter 'y' the message will be private. Now you will be in the editor. To end the message press return on a line by itself. You will then be at the message prompt which asks you if you what to: A)bort, C)ont, D)elete, E)dit, F)ree, L)ist, S)ave Option ? Abort- Aborts the message and puts you back to the main menu prompt. Continue- Continue puts you back into the editor at the end of the last line. Delete - asks for a line # to delete. Edit - asks you which line you wish to edit. Free - Lists the bytes remaining for the current message. List - Lists the message. Save - Saves the current message. F - File list 'f' will list the files in the current conference. When you press 'f' you will be shown a list of all the directories (Filehelp.txt or FileHelp.txt.gr). If you press 'a' you will be shown all the files in the conference, 'u' will show only the upload directory (highest number directory). You can also enter a number from '1' to the highest number directory. If you have 10 directories you can enter a number from 1 to 10. From the main menu you can enter 'f u' to list the upload directory, or 'f 3' to list directory number 3. The file that gets printed out when 'f' is entered is 'filehelp.txt' which is in 'bbs:{Conference}'. NOTE: In each conference there should be a file called NDIRS, all this file does is tell AmiExpress the number of directories you have. NOTE: You should also have a file named "paths", this is all the paths the bbs will search for files in the specific conference. For example if you have paths set to "BBS:Files/" that is the ONLY path the bbs will search for files in. SO DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE CONFERENCE UPLOAD PATH IF YOU WANT THE BBS TO RECONGISE NEW UPLOADS. ie BBS:{CONFNAME}/UPLOAD/ *** Don't forget the trailing backslash! *** G - Goodbye Goodbye logs the current user out. If you user has any partial uploads they will be first told so and asked if they still want to logout. If they enter 'y' the BBS will log them out, if they press 'n' they will be will be asked if they want to view a list of there partial uploads. If they enter 'n' they will be put back to the main menu, if they enter 'y' they will be shown a list of files that they started to upload. At each one of the files they will be asked if they want to resume the upload. If you entering 'y' the BBS will start receiving the reset of the file. If you entering 'n' the BBS will ask you if you want to delete the aborted file. H - Help with BBS, displays the file BBS:bbshelp.txt or bbshelp.txt.gr J - Join a conference When you press 'j' to join a conference you will be shown a list of the different conferences (JoinConference.txt or JoinConference.txt.gr). You can then enter the number corosponing to the conference that you want to join. If you do not have access to the conference you select you will be told so by the BBS. If you press return by itself on the conference menu you will be put back to the main menu. Each conference is totally separate from the other conferences. Each conference has its own message base and file area, and you must have access to be able to join the conference. From the main menu you can enter 'j #' where # is the number of a conference that you want to join. ie. 'j 2' will join conference 2. When you press 'g' for goodbye, whatever conference you are currently in will be the conference you will be in the next time you call. The file that is printed when 'j' is entered is 'joinconference.txt' for non-ANSI graphics and 'joinconference.txt.gr' for ANSI graphics, both are located in 'BBS:'. In this text file you do not have to list a conference. This way you can have conferences that are totally private that only select people know about. For example you could have a conference for friends that is not listed. Regular users would not know about this conference. M - ANSI graphics on/off This will toggle the ANSI graphics on and off. ANSI graphics files end in .gr. For example 'main.txt' is the non-ANSI menu and 'main.txt.gr' is the ANSI menu. N - New files or list files since a date This new files command will list all new files since a certain date. When you enter 'n' at the main menu you will be asked to enter a date. You can just press return here for a listing since the default date, which is the last time you called. You will then be asked which directories you want to list. You can enter a number from 1 to the highest number directory, 'a' for all, or 'u' for the upload directory. From the main menu you can enter 'n date dir'. For example you if you entered 'n 01-01-89 u' you would be shown all the files in the upload directory since 01-01-89 (January 1, 1989). There is one other format for this command, 'n s dir', which will list files since the last time you called in the directory you specify. For example 'n s u' will list all the files in upload directory since the last time you called. The files that 'n' uses are 'dir#' in 'BBS:', where # is the directory number. O - Operator page Beeps every second for 30 seconds and changes username red if Sysop does not answer. R - Read mail (+ or -) When you press 'r' at the main menu you will be show the next unread message. You then have the choice of doing the following: A>gain - Read the current message again D>elete - Delete the current message (if TO or FROM you) R>eply - Reply to the current message Q>uit - Stop reading messages =Next - Read next available message S - print your stats This will print the following: (123456789) Conf Access : XX_______ | X signifies access to that conference. CallerNumber: 1234 | Number of times BBS called by users. Last Date On: 06-11-88 | When the last day you called Security Lev: 10 | Your access level on the BBS # Iimes On : 22 | Number of times BBS called by you. T - Displays the current time. NOTE: The time displayed is the time that your amiga clock is set to, if you don't set the date this will most likely be wrong. U - Upload a file Once 'u' is entered the BBS checks to see if you have any partial uploads, if you don't the bbs will ask for filenames and then descriptions of the file to be uploaded, if you want to skip manual file entry you can just hit return and the bbs will start to receive new files, on the other hand if you do the BBS will ask you if you want to resume on them if you select yes the bbs will sends a Zmodem header and waits for you to start the transfer, if you select no it will ask you if you want to delete that partial upload, if you say yes it will be deleted if you say no, it will abort back to the menu prompt. You can batch upload as many files you like. If your try to upload a file that already exites, the BBS will skip that file and go to the next file or if it is the last file it will quit the upload. Once the transfer is complete the BBS will check to make sure the filename(s) are not longer than 12 characters, if it is you will be asked to enter a new filename. Next you will be asked to enter a description for the file. This description can be up to eight (8) lines long. When the description is done entering a return on a line by itself will end. If is was a batch upload you will be ask to enter the description for the rest of the files.. W- Write your stats This allows the user to change their name, location, phone number, and password V - view a text file This will let you view (read) a text file that is the file listings. When you press 'v' you will be asked the filename you want to view. Enter the filename and the BBS will display the file. From the main menu you can also enter 'v filename' where filename is the file you want to view. Sysops can view any text file on the system. For a sysop to view the startup-sequence they would enter 'v s:startup-sequence'. X - toggle expert on/off (menus on/off) If you have expert on you will not see the menu at the prompt enless you enter '?'. If you have expert off you will be shown the menu every time the menu prompt is displayed. Z - zippy file search Zippy file search searches for a specific text string. When you enter 'z' you will be asked for the string you want to search for, and then what directories you want to search in. You can enter 'z search_string directory' at the main menu prompt. The following line will display all files that have 'game' in the filename or the disruption and will search all directories: z game a Section 5 - New Features ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 08-11-89 Added Free downloading, to make a file a free download all you have to do is add an "F" in the file comment and it will be a free download 11-11-89 Added the ability to Zoo mail in a conference the command is ZooM for Zoo Mail, anyway you need to create a Directory named ZOOM in BBS: and add this directory to the paths file in each conference.
