use the time to think up a new one.
     Take a break, recharge the batteries. I think most of your subscribers
will survive on 11 issues of JUMPDISK a year. We can stock up on Fish disks
to keep us alive.

     I certainly agree with your editorial policy of exposing software
pirates. If we don't buy the software we want and need, we won't have any at
all.

     Thanks to Alan Swithenbank for his fine STRUCTURES series on advanced
Basic programming, especially the material on the Drawimage() function and
how to use it in Basic. It is just the sort of approach that allows
programmers to use the amenities of languages like C and Assembly that are
usually not available to Basic programmers.
     Also, I have been in contact with HiSoft in England. They offer
encouragement to users of their excellent Basic compiler. They are currently
making arrangements with a new distributor for their products in North
America and "have a new version of HiSoft Basic under development, but
version 1.05 is the latest Amiga version." They can be reached by mail at:

     My correspondence has been with David Nutkins. They are very helpful
and fairly quick in answering letters. I called once and had an informative
session with their technical people. Occasionally, odd things do happen with
the compiler, but they seem to be relatively minor.

     FROM EDITOR: HiSoft Basic has become the JUMPDISK compiler of choice,
because it produces smaller standalone code than competitors, and because it
can be PowerPacked for further byte savings.

3]MODEM TUTORIAL, PLEASE - James N. Rhodes, Winnipeg, MB, Canada
     I would like to see a tutorial on how to use a modem. I think many
people would benefit from it. What do I look for in buying one? How do I set
it up? How do I use terminal programs such as Access and JR-Comm?

     I haven't seen anything by Tom Krotchko lately in JUMPDISK. Has one of
my favorite authors traded in his Amiga?

     FROM EDITOR: Tom and his wife have become parents for the first time.
Certainly, we hope he resumes contributions to JUMPDISK. But for now, we
imagine the Krotchkos are quite busy with family life.
