     GESSO is a paint program with enough features to keep you creatively
busy for a long while. Images can both be loaded from and saved to disk.
     To run the program, double-click on its icon. It opens a window on the
Workbench screen. In the window are gadgets for resolution and color. Select
the gadgets of your choice and then select OK. There are two buttons that do
not work as of this version.
     A screen with the resolution you picked will open and an "About" window
will pop up. Click on this window to get rid of it.
     If you hold down the right mouse button you will see the following menu
items:

     If you release the right button without selecting an item, the drawing
tool window will pop up (same as selecting Drawing Tools from the Windows: 
menu). This window can be closed again by clicking the box in the upper left
corner or by clicking outside the window. Clicking the box will prevent any
drawing onto the screen.
     Inside this window you will see many gadgets. To the left side under the
close gadget are the open and filled circle gadgets. To the right of these
are the open and filled rectangle gadgets. To the right of these is the
straight line gadget. And to the right of that is the connected line gadget.
     To use them, select the tool of your choice, then close the tool window.
If you selected CIRCLE, choose a center for your circle and press and hold
down the left mouse button. Drag the mouse around until the circle is the
size you want it, then release the button. For the RECTANGLE press the button
over one corner of the rectangle you want to draw and release the button over
the opposite corner. For the LINE tool press the button at one end of the line
and release at the other. For the CONNECTED LINE, just press to draw and
release to stop.
     To the right of the connected line gadget are the SOLID and CHECK
gadgets. One or the other is always selected. If the top (solid) is selected,
all drawing operations are normal. If the bottom (check) is selected, the
current color is mixed with another color when drawn onto the screen. If you
select Normal from the Drawing Mode menu, the color will be mixed with the
background color. If you last selected Jam2 from the menu, the color will be
mixed with the color you selected immediately before it. The gadget in the
lower left shows the last two colors you selected.
     To the right of the Solid and Check tools are the MAGNIFY, SCISSORS,
CLEAR, and FLOOD gadgets.
     If you click on MAGNIFY a screen will open with a magnified view of your
picture. In the upper left is a color bar you can use to select the color of
the pixels you edit. To close this screen, just click outside it. You can
also open this screen by selecting "MAGNIFY" from the Windows menu.
     If you click on SCISSORS, the tools window will disappear. The program
will wait for you to define a rectangle. Press the button at the upper left
and release at the lower right of the region you want to cut out (any order
will work). Then when you press the left mouse button a copy of your region
will be pasted on the screen.
     CLEAR (CLR) fills the entire screen with the current color.
     FLOOD fills the screen with the current color from the location you
select outward until it finds a border.
     To change the color with which you are drawing, open the tools window
again. In the bottom middle is the color selecting gadget. Click on the color
you want for drawing.
     On the right side of the tools window are different sizes and shapes of
brushes you can use. Select one and draw with it.
     Under the brushes are two gadgets. The UNDO gadget erases the last
drawing operation. If you press it again it will undo itself. The palette
gadget opens a window you can use to edit the red, green, and blue values of
your colors. You can also open this window by selecting "Palette Adjust" from
the windows menu.
     To save your picture, select "Save IFF File" from the Gesso 1.0 menu.
Type the name of your picture in the string gadget at the bottom of the
requester that appears and select "OK". Do the same to load a picture.
     Select "New" from the menu to start over. The resolution window will
once again open on the Workbench screen.
     Select "Quit" to quit. This program does not warn you if you failed to
save your picture before quitting, so use this menu item with care.
     Normal and JAM2 (from the Drawing Mode menu) were discussed above.
COMPLEMENT inverts the image under your pen. COMP&JAM1 inverts every other
pixel if in Check Mode. COMP&JAM2 inverts every pixel in Check Mode.
