RamWorks 2000 Addendum
======================

This ReadMe file includes information about the RamWorks 2000 configuration,
the MergeMem program, and the RamWorks 2000 Memory Test.

Memory Configuration
--------------------

Memory on the RamWorks 2000 card is organized into from one to four blocks,
depending on the total amount of RAM on the card.  For example, if you have
8 Meg on the card, it is organized as two 4 Meg blocks.  The MergeMem program
will join these two blocks into one for memory-management purposes.  The
following table shows how each possible memory size will be organized.

MergeMem
--------

The MergeMem file included on the RamWorks 2000 disk is a modified version of
the MergeMem file included on the Amiga system disk.  The patched version is
more thorough than the standard MergeMem in finding and linking memory and
therefore enables the Amiga to recognize some memory configurations that the
standard MergeMem cannot.

Replacing MergeMem

You can use the Workbench, CLI, or a copy program to copy the AE version of
MergeMem to the System Directory of your boot disk.  For example, to copy
AE's MergeMem to the System Directory using CLI, you would do the following:

Note:  These instructions assume that you are using two drives to copy the
       file.

1)     Boot the Amiga with the System disk you usually use.

2)     Insert the RamWorks 2000 disk into the floppy drive.

3)     Run the CLI from your System disk by double-clicking the Shell icon
       (if you're booting into the Workbench).

4)     Enter:

         COPY RamWorks2000:MergeMem (bootdisk):SYSTEM

       where (bootdisk) is either DF1, DF0 or the name of your hard disk.

5)     Enter:

         COPY RamWorks2000:MergeMem.info (bootdisk):SYSTEM

Modification is complete.


The RamWorks 2000 Memory Test
-----------------------------

The RW 2000 memory test displays a graphic representation of the board and
its RAM chips.  You can run the test by doing any one of the following:

o      Disk:  Boot the RamWorks 2000 disk.

o      Workbench:  Double-click the RamWorks2000 icon.

o      CLI:  With the directory containing the RamWorks2000 file active,
       enter:

         RamWorks2000

Click on the Begin Memory Test button to start the test.  Click the left
mouse button to quit the test.

The Key

o      Grey:  RAM chips that are missing or that the system has a problem
       recognizing.

o      Black:  Installed, good RAM chips.

o      Red:  Installed, bad RAM chips.

o      Yellow:  RAM chips currently being tested.

o      Column Numbers:  A bank of 4 good chips that the system can recognize
       and use.  If there is no number at the top of a column but the chips
       are black, the chips are fine but the system cannot use that memory.

Getting the Most from Your Memory

The Amiga system will use the memory from the RW 2000 combined with memory
from any other memory card(s) you have installed.  But because the Amiga
recognizes only certain memory configurations, (not exceeding 8 Meg) you may
need to experiment to determine which configuration maximizes use of the
available memory.

If some of the memory installed on your RW 2000 does not appear to be used
(one or more columns of chips are black but not numbered), try removing the
top chip from the last column of chips (turn off the computer first!).  This
will "disable" one column of RAM and possibly reorganize the memory into
different size blocks.  This may enable the system to recognize more of the
total available memory.

For example, if you already have a 1 Meg memory board in your computer and
add an 8 Meg RW, the system would not recognize the RW's second bank of four
Meg.  If you remove one chip from the last column, reducing the total RAM to
7.5 Meg, an additional 3 Meg will be recognized by the system.  The RW will
be seen as a 4 Meg+2 Meg+1Meg RW in addition to the 1 Meg on the other memory
card (8 Meg total) instead of only a 4 Meg RW in addition to 1 Meg on the
other card (5 Meg total).
