INTRODUCTION Xpress is a harddisc-backup-utility. You can use it to backup/restore data from/to your harddisc. 2. HOW TO START THIS PROGRAM When the program is loading it tries to read the configuration parameters "devs:xpress.config". If you use Xpress for the first time, this is impossible, because you have not set these parameters yet. Therefore a requester comes up, which asks you, weather you allow the program to use it's build in parameters or not. If you want to continue please select 'yes'. After being loaded Xpress opens it's main window. After activating this window - by pressing the left mouse button once - you can either BACKUP, RESTORE or enter the PROJECT MENU. 3. THE PROJECT MENU (pull down window) It offers you the following options: a. ABOUT - Copyright of the program b. CONFIG - opens the configuration requester, where you choose your parameters (see 4. configuration requester) c. QUIT - quits Xpress. You can quit Xpress also by clicking on the close gadget. This can be done even while Xpress is in action. 4. THE CONFIGURATION REQUESTER a. Config backup flags - opens the parameter page of the Backup-mode b. Config restore flags - opens the parameter page of the restore mode c. start on screen/start on window - decides wheater the program opens a screen of it's own or runs in a window on the workbench. d. Max. read/write errors - decides what the minimum quality of the discs is, which you use for your backup. IF Xpress finds a read/write error it automatically switches to the next track and saves the data again. In your own interest you should not use the 'cheapest' discs, which you can get. e. Save Config - saves your parameter as "devs:xpress.config". These parameters are loaded by Xpress every time the program starts. f. Exit - quits the configuration requester. 5. BACKUP 5.1 THE PARAMETERPAGE Here you choose the path from the source (for example dh0:) to the target (for example DF0:). The program checks directly weather this path is possible or not. If not, it will place the cursor were you made your error. If you do not want to use a second taget device, just keep the option empty. a. Beep & Flash - if an error comes up the window will flash and also give an acoustic warning. b. Backup Protocol - gives you the option to save a backup protocol at the end of the backup. You enter the path for the protocol in the upcoming requester. c. Verify - switches Verify on/off. We advise you always to use VERIFY ON, because if you don't care, why would you backup your harddisc. f. Set Archive Flag - if you set the archive flag, the next time you backup you can choose to backup only the files which have been changed since your last backup. g. With "Go Back" you go back to the last page, with "Go On" you finish the parameterselection and proceed in the program. 5.2 PATH Now Xpress reads the structure of your path. You can interupt this by using the break gadget. 5.3. THE FILESELECTION-BOX The files and directories are displayed in the centre of the page. If more space is needed than available, then you find further entries by using the scrollbar. Here you choose which files you want to copy. Select/deselect a file with the cursor and left mouse button. When you select it, it becomes your active file/ directory. If a directory contains subdirectories and files, they are displayed. If a directory is empty, you can not select it. 5.3.1 The GADGETS on the left side a. ROOT - the top directory of your choosen backup-path is the active directory. b. PARENT - goes back to the parent directory of your current directory c. Sub Dirs/THIS DIR - selects if the commands in the menu bar are valid only for the files in your current directory or if the commands are also valid for files in possible subdirectiries of your current directory. 5.3.2 The following Commands can be found in "CONDITION": a. UnSelect - unselects all files b. Select - selects all files c. Archive - selects all files, which have been changed since the last backup d. Filter - filters files by the criteria ARCHIVE, DATE and PATTERN. The status of a file is changed only when all activated criteria are met. e. Archive - see 5.1f, at this place it can be used in a combination. f. Date - filters files in conjunction to the selected dates. g. Pattern - filters files by pattern. Xpress allows also '*' for '#?'. h. Include - includes files which have been selected by filter. i. Exclude - excludes files which have been selected by filter. k. Done - stops filter. Xpress shows you all the time how many bytes your backup contains and how many disks you will need for your backup. When you are finsihed with your selection press "Done!". 5.4. THE BACKUP All you have to do at this point, is to change disks. Xpress tells you where to remove a disk and were to insert a new disk. You don't need to preformat the disks. You can stop the backup-process by using the "Abort"-Gadget. When the backup is finished the program asks you for a TREE-disk. On this disk the program will save the tree (directory) of the backup. This is your most important disk when you RESTORE. 'DONE' brings you back to the start menu. 6. RESTORE 6.1. The parameter page of RESTORE is almost equal to the parameter page of BACKUP (see 5.1). The differences are: a. Overwrite Files - selects if files on the backup-disks should overwrite files on the harddisk or not, in case they have the same name. b. Clear Archive - selects if the archive-flags of the files which are copied on to the hard disk shoud be deleted or not. If they are deleted it means, that they are recognized as new. 6.2. TREE When Xpress asks you to insert the TREE-disk of your backup, please do so and select "Done". If you do not enter a TREE-disk or select "Abort" the RESTORE is stopped. 6.3. The fileselecetion-box is exactly the same as the one in BACKUP, except it does not show how many disks you need (for a backup/see 5.3) 6.4. Restore itself works as Backup (see 5.4). 7. How to recognize a BACKUP-disk: If you forget which disk is your TREE-disk (of course, this could never happen to YOU!) or you do not know the number of a BACKUP-disk you can help yourself by loading a workbench. Then insert your disks and an icon will appear, which shows you either "TREE" or a number in form of Xnnn (for example X023 means BACKUP-disk 023). This should make your day.
