ON TARGET (A program by George Knight for darts competitors) || 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 ||| 33 || INTRODUCTION The program OnTarget was written to satisfy the particular needs of those concerned with the control of Darts Club events. It was developed in response to a request from Garry Simmonds of Newcastle. My knowledge of the game of Darts comes from no practical experience; I have been guided in my efforts by notes supplied by Garry. OnTarget will run, only if you have Workbench 2 or better. There are two programs in this package:- (a) OnTarget which is used mainly for data entry, and (b) OTPrint which produces printed reports. GETTING STARTED The OnTarget drawer can be moved onto any disk or hard drive, simply by dragging the drawer icon into the appropriate window.. OnTarget must be loaded from Workbench. Click on the OnTarget drawer and then on the OnTarget icon. A file requester opens giving you two options:- (a) You may select an existing data file (sample OT.data here) or (b) you may enter the name of a new file you wish to create. IMPORTANT: To start a new file, you must enter a file name in the requester. If you fail to do this, data will not be saved to disk. Click on OK and the OnTarget window opens. The name of the file loaded is displayed in the title bar. PLAYERS Before any data can be entered into OnTarget, a player record must exist. To create such a record, click on the NEW button and use the requester which opens. You must enter the player's name; if you wish, you may enter initial data for the player using the small integer gadgets in the requester. These gadgets allow entry of the number of 180 (maximum score) throws, the number of games played, the number of wins, the aggregate score, the number of darts thrown to achieve that aggregate and "High Peg" score. When satisfied press the OK button and the player's details will be shown in the large display area. DATA ENTRY The right hand section of the window is reserved for data entry. The column on the right displays all the scores that have been entered through the string gadget at the bottom of the column. When the OnTarget window first opens, both the column and the string gadget are empty; the string gadget is active, ready for data entry; simply type in a score and press RETURN or ENTER. The score is shown in the narrow box above and the string gadget is automatically cleared and re-activated, ready for the entry of another score. OnTarget assumes that three darts have been thrown for each score if only an integer less than 181 is entered; any score above 180 (maximum) will be ignored. Where fewer than 3 darts have been thrown, indicate this by entering, after the score, a slash and either '1' or '2', e.g., 32/2 says that 32 points were scored from 2 darts. If you attach '/3' to a score from 3 darts, this will become the new High Peg score if it is greater than the currently stored value. To correct a score, click on that score in the column and it will be displayed in the entry string gadget. Make the alteration and press RETURN. To delete an entry, do the same thing but clear the string gadget (hold down the right Amiga key and press the "x" key) and then press RETURN or ENTER. The two small integer gadgets immediately to the left of the score string gadget can be used to enter the number of games played (P) in the current session and the number of winning games (W). UPDATING Before updating the results summary, you must first select the player concerned. You do this by clicking on the line in which this player's statistics appear in the main display area. The player's name will then be displayed above the DELETE and UPDATE buttons at the bottom of the window. If you press the UPDATE button, a small requester opens showing a summary of the data entered and this allows a quick check prior to updating. If you are not satisfied click on CANCEL and check through the data entered. If satisfied, click on UPDATE and all scores entered and the number of games played and won will be used to update the player's statistics. EDITING STATISTICS To edit any of the player's records, first select the player by clicking on a name in the main display and then press the EDIT button. A requester opens showing the current contents of the selected player's record in string gadgets. To modify any of the displayed information, simply click in a gadget to activate it and change the contents in the usual way. DELETION To remove a player from the records, select the player concerned (as in updating) and click on delete. Occasionally, a player's records may become corrupt. If this becomes intolerable, it may be best to delete the player's record and re-enter the name and historical data using the facility for new players (see above). Not all of the stored data required is displayed on the OnTarget screen. All detailed information may be obtained using the print program OTPrint (see below). CLEARING STATISTICS At the end of a season, there is the need to clear all statistics and to begin recording afresh. To do this, simply click on the CLEAR button. Don't forget, however, to save or at least print out the stored data before using this facility. When you press CLEAR, you will be asked to confirm your intentions. SAVE Before quitting, press the SAVE button to save your data to disk; the statistics will be saved to the file opened at the start of the run. DATA SECURITY Backup is important in all systems. Always make a copy of your OnTarget files at the end of each session so that, if wrong data is input, you can copy back and re-input. OnTarget gives warnings where there are potentially dangerous requests. Do not ignore them! A little consideration may obviate the need for unnecessary work. PRINTED REPORTS In the same drawer as OnTarget, there is a program, OTPrint, which may be used to obtain printed reports from the data files created by OnTarget. Click on the OTPrint icon and a requester opens allowing you to specify your choice of the options available. You must first load the data from which a report is to be prepared. If you press the LOAD button, a file requester opens, allowing you to select a data file. If you want to add to this the data from other files, press the APPEND button and repeat the above procedure. Use LOAD to clear the internal data buffer and input a file and use APPEND to add to the data buffer. The name of any file read is listed in the small window to the left and above the OTPrint window. At the top of the window there is a string gadget. Through this gadget, you may enter a title for the report, e.g., the name of the team or group involved. If you leave this blank or clear it using right-Amiga X key combination, a filename will appear as the title. Below the title gadget on the left, there are four buttons; use these to specify the way the records are to be sorted prior to printing. On the right, there are three buttons. If you choose either the top or the bottom button, a report for all players will be obtained. Choice of the top button produces a detailed listing and choice of the bottom button produces a summary report. To obtain a report exclusively for players who have scored 180, press the middle button. When satisfied with the requester settings, check that your printer is on and press the PRINT button.
