would like to ask a favor from you...if you appreciate our work, please let
AMIGAWORLD and the other Amiga magazines know how we are doing. Word-of-

Deleted From TNS v1: More_Stuff/VT.Knows

If you NEED any of the above file(s), please contact us. It will cost you
$1.25 (disk, mailer, postage) to get the file(s).

PLEASE NOTE: If you had Virus Interceptor on a previous SUPERKILLERS v1
disk, it's not on this one. It is back on the SUPERKILLERS v2 disk, and
will continue to be updated as new versions are released.

1.1 IMPORTANT NEWS
-------------------

Well, the F*** virus apparently is under control now...but that does not
mean we are out of the woods yet. Please read the "Important" file on TNS
v1, which goes into detail about the four new threats to the Amiga.

1.2 For Subscribers
--------------------

Jim Maciorowski (SHI Florida) will be getting married in March 1994! All
current SHI/FLA subscriptions that will be processed for that month will
either be delayed one week or be handled by Michael Arends (SHI Washington).

1.3 An Interesting Situation
-----------------------------

(contributed by Jim Maciorowski of SHI/Florida)

For the past month I have been back-and-forth with a person whose name no
longer appears on the SHI Support list below (Section 10.0). For the sake
of redundancy we will call that person USER. What I had done was send USER
all four of the SHI Amiga disks. Upon USER's receipt of the disks, USER
realized that one disk (SHI UTILITIES) had a bunch of read errors on it.
When I received USER's letter regarding this incident (and the fact that, in
USER's opinion, the SHI UTILITIES disk was user-UN-friendly), I promptly
sent USER a new disk. I also stated that I would send USER a pre-release of
SHI UTILITIES v2 (which took a week out of my less-than-NIL free time).

Not too long ago I received a "final" letter from USER, saying that the
second disk of SHI UTILITIES I sent to USER was worse than the first one.
Furthermore, USER stated that USER's money was wasted and thrown down the
drain...and that USER was going to write to AMIGAWORD and AMAZING COMPUTING
and warn everyone about big bad SHI...

...all because of the read errors on one disk.

Well, USER also requested to have USER's name removed from the thank-you
list. I also have offered to give USER's money back to USER (not once did
USER ask for it, just repeatedly said it was wasted). I have tried to
please USER and failed. The problem, to this date, has not been solved
because USER has given up on SHI, even after my offer to continue to help
until the problem has been resolved.

The problem I have been noticing is that, in some cases, there will be read
errors on disks when you receive them. That's Murphy's Law, and Murphy
happens to work at the post office. When disks leave my apartment, they are
tested and certified 100% error-free. I would not DARE send them out with
errors on them, yet USER seems to think so.

If you are EVER experiencing ANY problem with ANY of SHI's disks, I
encourage you STRONGLY to write to myself, to Michael Arends, or to SHI
Headquarters in Denmarkand and let us know what the problem is. We will try
to solve the problem the first time, and if it doesn't work, we will keep
trying until the problem is solved. WE WILL NOT GIVE UP UNTIL YOU ARE 100%
SATISFIED WITH US. That has always been our commitment but apparently it
was never stated anywhere. So, let it be said now.

Some users (different from USER) have sent back disks with read errors (not
just the SHI UTILITIES) and have quickly received new copies. Please don't
think that we just take your money and run. I have been with SHI for two
years and, between Michael Arends and myself, we have made a lot of people
happy. If you're not happy with us, please tell us. We want to know why.

1.4 The "Scoop" on Our Disks
-----------------------------

1) Our disks are self-booting. All necessary files to make the programs
work are included on the disks. NO OTHER DISK (ie, Workbench) IS REQUIRED!
However, you will need to boot from our disks in order to take full
advantage of the programs. Also, we have a custom bootblock for our disks
which some virus killers may report as being a "non-standard bootblock".
This is okay, because it is NOT a virus!

2) To get the most programs and their documentation on a single disk, we use
IMPLODER and POWERPACKER to reduce the size of the files while still
retaining their full features. These programs can be found on our SHI
UTILITIES disk.

3) To use these programs on a hard drive, you will need to copy all
necessary files over. In addition, you may need to copy the
"explode.library" and the "powerpacker.library" (found in the LIBS:
directory of our disks) into the LIBS: directory of your hard drive. If
you are unfamiliar with the CLI, we suggest using DIRWORK, found on the SHI
UTILITIES disk.

4) 100% ERROR FREE GUARANTEE! Our disks are mailed via US First Class Mail.
Occasionally you may get errors on the disks due to shipping and handling.
If you experience any read errors while using our disks for three weeks
since the day they were sent out, simply mail the disks back to us and we
will gladly replace them! (SHI uses the postmark date for this
determination).

5) 50% of the sales of our disks are equally distributed among the authors
featured on our disks. But it is a small amount compared to how helpful
these programs are. If you have a favorite program featured on our disks,
please send something to the author; a letter of appreciation is good, and
money is never refused!

6) Our SUPERKILLERS v1 disk is "recyclable"! Ask for more details!

1.5 Basic Definitions
----------------------

VIRUS: A piece of programming code that self-replicates, usually with the
intention of damaging software and/or hardware.

TROJAN HORSE: A file that contains a virus. It can be advertised as a
"latest version" and, when executed, releases the virus

BOMB: A piece of programming code with the intention of damaging software.
Unlike a virus, it does not self-replicate

FILE VIRUS: Believed to be a virus in the form of an executable file.

2.0 Who Are We?
================

Jim Maciorowski is a 22 year-old data entry operator, disgusted with the
damage and fear viruses are causing. With the help of Erik Loevendahl
Soerensen, he has started the first USA Regional Virus Center. His
programming experience "stems" from Apple computers, with some experience in
PC applications and some with Amigas. He recently became engaged to his
girlfriend, Becky, and spends much of his free time with his family.

Jim's Amiga system is composed of an Amiga 1200 with a 121 megabyte internal
hard drive, a 1084 monitor, a 24-pin printer, and a 9600 HST modem.

Michael Arends is 34 years old and is working at Boeing in Everett,
Washington. He lives with his wife Marthe and their cat, two dogs, two
birds, and two tropical fish.

Michael's Amiga system is composed of an Amiga 2000 with two hard drives (465
megabytes total) and CSA Derringer (50 mhz 68030).

NEITHER ONE OF US SPEAKS DANISH, so if you have any questions regarding this
language, please contact the SHI Headquarters in Denmark. :-)

3.0 Distribution of the SHI Disks
==================================

The USA versions of the SHI Disks are FREELY DISTRIBUTABLE with a nominal
fee for copying allowed (NO MORE THAN $5.00). Spreading these disks via
modem is counterproductive and redundant.

Attention Users Groups: Please send a small donation to SHI (in care of the
Regional Virus Center coordinator) if you receive any large profits from the
sale of these disks. Recommended donation is 50 cents per disk, and can be
made out and sent to the Regional Virus Center for faster processing.

4.0 Where Your Money Goes From Purchasing SHI Disks
====================================================

A recent "audit" was done to find out exactly what costs were involved in
being a Regional Virus Center. The results showed that a LOT more money was
put out than was taken in by the RVCs to cover expenses. Also, the price of
magnetic media rose slightly. Therefore, the figures below have changed and
are effective as of 01-Sep-93:

45% - The anti-virus programmers (John Veldthuis, Georg Hoermann, Heiner
Schneegold, Johan Eliasson, Ronny Oretap, and Chris Hames)
5% - Safe Hex International (to help THEIR costs)
50% - Our Cost (Mailers, Disks, Postage--hey, it adds up!)
=======
100% - Total Breakdown

Our Profits from sales of this disk: $0.00

We honestly feel that this cause is worth fighting for, therefore we do this
work without money in mind. We try the best we can to make the subscription
prices to help with the failing US economy, and at the same time not cheating
anyone out of any money. Most of the time we end up paying more from our own
pockets than the actual money we receive from people who purchase the SHI
disks.

5.0 Why Subscribe To THE NEW SUPERKILLERS?
===========================================

You may ask yourself, "Why should I subscribe to a disk full of virus-killing
programs when I can download the 'latest' versions of single killers directly
from an international network or BBS?"

By subscribing you would...

1) ...Avoid getting "trojan horses" (viruses in the form of "new releases")
Case in point: BootX 5.02 was a bogus release!

2) ...Support ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAMMERS who spend literally THOUSANDS of hours
trying to save your computer from viruses ...and who ask for little or
nothing in return!! When you download from a BBS, you support no one,
except maybe the SysOps or the phone company.

3) ...Receive LEGITIMATE updates from a known and RELIABLE source, DIRECT
from the Safe Hex Headquarters in Denmark to the Regional Virus Centers
   in the United States!

4) ...Get PHONE SUPPORT for your virus problems!

5) ...Get FREE bonus disks periodically!

6) ...SAVE MONEY as opposed to buying individual updates!

7.0 Where To Send New Viruses
==============================

If you come across a NEW virus, and you don't wish to send it overseas to the
virus killer authors (we know how postage costs can eat your wallet alive),
please send it to the SHI/USA Regional Virus Centers. We will forward the
virus  to  the appropriate powers that be.  WE DON'T CARE what disk it is on;
what counts is the new virus for updating our killers. You can send it
ANONYMOUSLY if you wish, but PLEASE mark "VIRUS" on the disk so we can
understand what it is (and protect our computers!)

See our addresses in section 7.2 below.

7.3 PC Viruses Wanted Too!
---------------------------

This may sound crazy, but send us any PC viruses you may come across! Now,
you may ask yourself, "Self, I have an Amiga...how can I be infected with a
PC virus?" The answer is...YOU CAN'T!! But for those of you who have a
second computer, or a PC emulator for your Amiga, our call goes out to you!

SHI has released the PC versions of virus killers, and we need PC viruses to
update them! Even if you know a BBS that carries viruses...we'll work on
prosecuting them!

8.0 Ordering Instructions
==========================

1) Individual SHI Disks are $5.00 for the first one ordered, and $4.00 for
each one ordered after the first one. For example, 2 disks would be $9.00,
5 disks would be $21.00, etc.

2) If you have previously purchased THE NEW SUPERKILLERS v1, you can return
the disk and obtain the latest version. This is an alternate version of
"recycling", where you will use the disk over and over. The cost to recycle
TNS v1 is $4.00, and the best time to do it is about 3-4 months since your
last purchase. NOTE: The original label MUST be on the disk, or else it
will be unprocessed.

3) Releases of disks under Subscription services are based upon the original
Denmark releases. SHI Main releases a new version of SUPERKILLERS v1 on or
around the first of each month, which arrive in the United States abot 7-10
days later. USA Updates are released approximately 48 hours upon receipt,
shipped via US First Class Mail. However, there is no guarantee on any
certain delivery date. In some cases the virus killers won't have updated,
and in other cases there are overseas shipping delays. This is why there is
no "monthly" subscription, but rather an "update" subscription.

4) Please enclose payment with the order form. DO NOT MAKE CHECKS OR MONEY
ORDERS OUT TO "SAFE HEX INTERNATIONAL", as cashing checks and money orders
overseas can be extremely costly.

11.0 For Users Groups...
=========================

According to SHI bylines, you are NOT supposed to charge LESS for this disk
than you paid for it through Safe Hex International. If you receive any
profits from the sale of the disks, please make a contribution to SHI (but
again, make checks or money orders payable to a Regional Virus Center
Coordinator!)

We are available to speak at user group meetings...please contact us for
meeting arrangements and availability!

Remember: The work we do for SHI is NOT our full-time job. It is a hobby.

12.0 Often-Asked Questions and Answers
=======================================

Q: How do I know you're not doing this for profit?

A: We've tried going through the "legal channels" to make this an OFFICIAL
non-profit organization, but the cost alone just to be established
was outrageous. If you need actual proof that we are doing this not for
profit, contact Erik Soerensen or Lars Kristensen in Denmark. They have
records of all moneys sent to them from us. Better yet, write to the
   anti-virus programmers.

Q: When are the SHI projects going to happen, ie, a universal BBS killer?

A: Some of the projects are happening as you read this. The "bootblock"
virus library has been completed, and can be found on programs like X-Copy
(by Cachet Software) and D-Copy (which can be found on the SHI UTILITY
   DISK).

As for other projects, we are looking for programmers. If you know of any
good ones, please let us know!

Q: Are software companies intentionally producing these viruses, so that
they in turn can sell virus-killing programs at a huge profit?

A: Perhaps....Most of the time it is done by someone who just wants to ruin
your system. Other times it is poor programming by "hackers". Still
other times it is "system glitches" and not a virus at all. This is why
it is IMPORTANT to have the latest information on these things, and even
MORE important to have the latest killers from a non-commercial center.
In the long run, the only one who profits is YOU.

Q: What's the difference between ordering from Jim in Florida and ordering
   from Michael in Washington?

A: Not a thing...but if you live closer to either place, the length of time
to get disks in the mail is decreased.

Q: What's the difference between ordering from SHI and from a users group?

A: You may get a different price, be it higher or lower (probably lower), if
you go through a users group that subscribes to the SHI disks. By going
this route, you are supporting only the user groups, NOT the SHI
programmers. Only by ordering through SHI will you be supporting the
people who make the programs on the disks. Also, SHI always has the
   latest updates!

Q: Why isn't SUPERKILLERS available to download from the RVC BBS's?

A: Good question. Let's take the Fred Fish library for example. A man
compiles a disk, distributes it to subscribers, and within a week almost
every major BBS has the disks. Then the users of those boards download
it for free, and Fred Fish gets ZERO for the disk. The disks aren't
spread ILLEGALLY, but the fact that too many people have access to them
and don't get it from a source indicates leeching and poor computing.

Q: But Fred Fish is a COMPILER, not a PROGRAMMER. Is SHI this way too?

A: SHI is composed of several programmers and translators. In essence,
"SHI" and "Anti-Virus Programmers" are synonymous. SHI is NOT a compiling
organization. We collect new viruses and help the authors who are
making the anti-virus programs and share the contributions that are
sent to SHI. Don't think of us as another Fred Fish, although we have
been quoted as being such. We work hard to keep your Amiga virus-free.
Don't you think a few bucks is good preventative maintenance from
something that could destroy thousands of hours of work in mere seconds?

Q: Will there ever be a killer that checks for files within a compressed
archive, such as those done with LHA and LZH?

A: Maybe someday...we are looking for programmers to do this project!

Q: What future projects do you have in store for us in the USA?

A: Jim has already started the VSUM-like program that has the list of all
known Amiga viruses and what they do. Mike and Jim are making
arrangements to have a DOS 2.0/3.0 version of SUPERKILLERS, and are in
the process of writing new articles.

13.0 BOGUS RELEASES
====================

What? Someone put a virus in a new utility program? Unheard of! Sad but
true, these things happen...whether or not someone put a virus in a program,
it's best NOT to use bogus versions of programs. Below is a list of certain
programs that are considered "bogus"...and if you use them (or have been
using them), you should DEFINITELY check your disks for possible virus
infection!

BootX 5.02
DirWork 1.71
SnoopDOS 2.0
VirusX (any version after 4.01, the last OFFICIAL release)
MCHECK.lha (alleged archive containing the F*** virus)

(If you hear of any more, please let us know!!)

14.0 A Word from the Authors
=============================

Koen Peetermans (author of Find Em All), 16-Jul-93

"I wish to thank you very much for your support in the past and now. In my
opinion you are running the [number] 1 Regional Virus [Centers] when it
comes to public relations, I've never seen [another] that has come close to
you both in advertising and enthusiasm." (Koen is currently experiencing
problems with updating Find Em All but takes pride in knowning that he has
pioneered the way for other viruskiller authors when it comes to memory
checking on the Amiga).

Peter Stuer (author of BootX and Early Virus Warning), 5-Aug-93

"Thanks for the 'portion' of the proceeds from the sales of the SHI [disks].
Depressing, isn't it?....I mean, REALLY DEPRESSING. As for...updating LVD
would mean getting into the virus stuff all over again. Please
understand...I don't have the time. I want to use the little spare time
that I have left for Amiga for 'other' creative stuff."

John Veldthuis (author of Virus Checker), 27-Jul-93

"Many thanks for the money. ...it is very hard to catch me here at any
particular time as I am a shift worker doing 12 hours days at 4 on 4 off."
(We asked John for his phone number, which is in the Virus Checker
documentation. We wanted to verify when a "new" release of VC was found.)

15.0 Closing Comments
======================

As you can see, this file grew considerably in size, primarily due to the
incident with USER (section 1.3 above). We needed to blow off some steam
and reassure you all that we are here to help you, but you have to give us a
chance to solve the problem and not give up. In that way we are all better
off and a LOT happier (and stress-free!)

Still no word on the update of BootX yet, but we will keep you informed once
the news gets out!

DON'T FORGET TO TELL A FRIEND ABOUT US!!

Sincerely,
                 >>> Jim Maciorowski and Michael Arends <<<
