VideoPAGE allows different sized and colored fonts on the same line of text, all proportionally spaced. After entering all of the screens that you wish, you may define and effects scenario, which generates the different effects required. VideoPAGE was designed with the professional video user in mind. What may seem as insignificant features, such as the large size of the requesters for easy viewing at a distance, all come together to aid the video professional in his or her video titling tasks. The VideoPAGE Package Your VideoPAGE package consists of four distribution diskettes, and this users manual. The distribution diskettes include one program diskette, and three font diskettes, and contain all of the programs and data that you will need in order to setup VideoPAGE, and start creating your own video titles. The users manual is designed as a handbook and guide for the novice, and as a useful reference guide for the experienced VideoPAGE user who may wish to solve any problems that he may have come across. System Requirements VideoPAGE runs on the Amiga family of computers. VideoPAGE requires AmigaDos version 1.2 or higher, at least 1 Megabyte of RAM memory, and a second disk drive or hard disk. It will run without a genlock device, although you may find it extremely difficult to output a normal video signal without one. VideoPAGE is NOT copy protected. We believe in the users right to make archival copies of the program just so long as they are ONLY for backup purposes. The Users Guide The Users Guide introduces you to VideoPAGE and shows you how to perform the functions that you may require. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 4 ----------------------------- Here is a breakdown of the chapters in the Users Guide: Chapter 1: The VideoPAGE Interface and General Concepts This chapter explains basic VideoPAGE concepts such as PAGES, FONTS, and general screen components. Chapter 2: A Simple Tutorial This chapter will lead you through a few of the most common task in VideoPAGE: Creating a full page of text while changing fonts and font colors. Also defining a simple effects screen. Chapter 3: The Editor This chapter describes the different editor commands that you can use while entering your text. Chapter 4: Effects This chapter shows you all of the effects available in VideoPAGE. Chapter 5: The VideoPAGE Reference Guide This chapter gives you a concise listing of the VideoPAGE action keys, and the function that each performs. Note: Through this manual, the user has been referred to in the male gender. This is for convenience only. We wish to apologize to any female VideoPAGE users for the innacuracy. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 5 ----------------------------- Chapter 1 - The VideoPAGE Interface The Font Cartridge Each VideoPAGE session works with its own font cartridge. The font Cartridge contains eight positions, six of which may be filled with fonts that the user wishes to use. The last two positions are reserved for the fonts that the system uses. The process of filling the cartridge is performed on the font selection screen. The Effects Scenario One of VideoPAGE's features is the ability to define an effects scenario that contains information about the different effects that will run, and the connection bewteen the effect, the page to be displayed, and the timing that each has. The Editor The editor is the basic unit for entering text in VideoPAGE. It has been designed to be easy to use, (simply type in the text) and yet has powerful functions that will enable the seasoned user to perform time saving tasks. The Font Selection Screen The Font Selection screen appears when pressing F8. Each font diskette comes with its own screen, all following the same interface conventions. Each font selection screen contains a picture of the cartridge. This cartridge shows six font positions, labeled #1 to #6. Next to these positions are a column of blue lights. Selecting Fonts and Different Diskettes When first entering the selection screen, the topmost blue light on the "Cartridge" has already been set to yellow, indicating that the system is ready to assign a disk font to the first font cartridge position. Click the mouse on one of the sixteen square buttons that appear to the left of the screen. These buttons are labeled with different numbers (22, 44, etc) and contain small "LED"s. The numbers represent the height of the font in pixels, and the vertical position of the button represents the style of the font. Thus, all of the buttons on the topmost row represent the different sizes of a Plain styled font. The buttons on the second row represent Block style and the fourth row, Shadowed. Once you have clicked on the font size button, the "LED" will VideoPAGE Users Manual page 6 ----------------------------- change color and become red. You have now described the first font position. Click the mouse on the second font position ("#2") and you will notice that the yellow light has turned off next to the #1, and and that a small tick mark has appeared. Additionally, the blue light next to the #2 has changed color and is now yellow. Continue the process of selecting font sizes as before until you have filled as much of the font cartridge as you need. The last font position that you fill will still have the yellow "LED" turned on. At this stage, click on the button labeled "LOAD" on the cartridge. The diskette will "whirr" a few moments and then stop. You may now remove the current font diskette and insert a different font diskette. The system will automatically load the new font selection picture and you may continue selecting fonts. If you wish to change diskettes at any stage, make sure that you click the mouse on the "LOAD" button. This will make the system load in the requested fonts from the diskette. After selecting all of the fonts that you wish to use in your session, you may now click on the "EXIT" button on the cartridge. Make sure however, that you have first loaded in the fonts by pressing on the "LOAD" button, as mentioned in the instructions above. The Status Stripe Pressing "Ctrl-S" will toggle between displaying and not displaying the status stripe. The stripe itself appears on the bottom of the editor screen, and contains important information as to the current status of the system. You will notice that the leftmost box contains the line number, followed by a box containing the current font number. This number will change when moving into text written with a different font. It will also change after selecting a working font (F9) and quick selection of a font (Alt 1-8). Next along the status stripe is a colored box. This tells us which color is the current rendering color. The color will change when F6 has been selected, or when you have changed the color using the (Ctrl 1-7) combination. After the current color box, you will see a box with the work "MODE" and either INS or OVER. This indicated whether the system is in the "INSERT" mode or the "OVERWRITE" mode. The letter will change when you toggle between the two modes using the "INS" key on the numeric key pad. Finally, in the rightmost position is a box with the page number inside. __________________________________________________________ | | | | | | | LINE # 01 | FONT # 1 | FONT COLOR | MODE IN | PAGE # 001 | |___________|__________|____________|_________|____________| VideoPAGE Users Manual page 7 ----------------------------- Throughout VideoPAGE, you will find various requesters. The following is a detailed explanation of how to perform the different actions that these requesters do. Disk Activity The F5 key will give you access to a range of different disk functions. You will see a small requester where the words "SAVE ALL" appear in the window at the bottom of the requester. Pressing the left and right arrow keys, will scroll through the different functions that you may wish to perform. These functions are loading and saving of text, scenario, and color palette information, deletion of files, and saving the screen as an IFF file. Once the required function appears in the small window, press RETURN. A file requester will appear. Type in the file name where requested and click on the "LOAD", "SAVE" or "DELETE" button. (the button changes depending on the disk activity that you have selected) The file requested will be loaded in, saved or deleted. Changing the Working Rendering Color When pressing F6, you will see a requester showing eight boxes in different colors. Pressing the left or right arrow, will move the highlighted box left and right. Once you have moved the box to the required position, pressing the RETURN key will select the color that the text is to be rendered in from now on. If you wish to exit without changing the color, press the ESC key. There is also another way of changing the working color. While working in the editor, you may press the CTRL key and one of the numbers 1 through 8 simultaneously, which will select the color number and will save you time, once you learn which color corresponds to which number.. The color change will be reflected in the status stripe on the editor screen. Modifying the System's Color Palette Pressing CTRL F6 will cause the program to display a requester showing three different vertical scales, (Red, Green, and Blue) and a line of colors. You may choose a color to modify by moving the highlighted box back and forth with the arrow keys. Alternatively, you may press the color number to move the square directly to a specific color. Once you have decided on the color to be modified, you may now change the RED, GREEN and BLUE components, either by using the mouse, or by pressing the "r", "g", or "b" keys to increment the color value, or SHIFT -"r" ("R"), SHIFT -"g" ("G") and SHIFT -"b" ("B") to decrease the value. Once the colors have been adjusted to your satisfaction, press the RETURN key to return to the editor. If you wish to exit from the requester at any stage, you VideoPAGE Users Manual page 8 ----------------------------- may do so by pressing the ESC key. All changes that you performed will be undone. Additionally, if you have changed a certain color and you wish to undo the last change, press the BACKSPACE key on the top right hand side of the keyboard, or click on the UNDO button. Note that you may also use the mouse to select and change the color palette. The RGB requester is also blessed with the special ability to toggle between visible and invisible. You would use this option when you have written text and wish to modify the palette, but the requester covers your text and you cannot see how the modification affects the screen. To hide the requester, and to bring it back, press the SPACE-BAR. While hidden, the other functions such as "R" still work. Choosing a Different Font for Work F9, much like F6, will display a line of six boxes. In these boxes you will notice a letter rendered in the different fonts that you loaded during the font selection screen. You may move the highlight from one box to another with the arrow keys. Once you have decided on the font that you wish to switch to, press RETURN, and you will return to the editor. If you wish to exit from the requester without changing anything, press ESC. Once again, as in color change, you may select a different font while in the editor by pressing the ALT key together with a number from 1 to 8. This will change the font, and will be reflected in the status stripe on the screen. Determining Line Justification In order to set the default line justification, you may use the "Ctrl-L" keys, which will left justify, "Ctrl-R" will right justify, and "Ctrl-M" will mid or center justify the line. If you wish to pixel adjust the line right or left, and do not want any standard justification, you can press the "Ctrl-N" for No justification. Once the justification has been set, any line that you either enter or pass through (using the up/down arrows) will be justified. NOTE - That if you have pixel adjusted a line right or left, and then have passed through it when justification is active, you will lose your last adjustment. In order to avoid this, we suggest using the "N" justification. Changing the X/Y Offset of the Screen You may sometimes wish to move the entire screen offset. Either up, down or the sides in order to align the program with your Amiga. You may do this by pressing F7 function key. A small box will appear in the center of the screen. Grab the slider in the center of the box, and move it around. Note how all of the screen moves with it. When you are pleased with the placement, click on the OK button. To cancel the Offset operation, click on the CANCEL button. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 9 ----------------------------- Chapter 2 - A Simple Tutorial General This chapter is designed to run through the functions that you will normally use in VideoPAGE, and to acquaint you with proper operations needed to produce your first scenario. First Things First The first thing that you should do upon receiving your VideoPAGE package is to make "backup" copies of your diskettes. Follow the instructions in your Amiga manual regarding the copying of diskettes. Making a Data Diskette You will probably want to make a data diskette that will hold all of the work that you have done using VideoPAGE. Fist format a new diskette. After the diskette has been formatted, create two new directories on it. One directory should be called "Palette" and the second directory should be called "Scenario". Follow the directions in your Amiga manual regarding the formatting of diskettes and the creation of directories. Hard Disk Installation To install VideoPAGE on your Hard Disk, boot the computer with your normal Workbench diskette. When the Workbench screen has come up, insert the VideoPAGE diskette into any drive. Click twice on the disk icon, and you will see an icon called "HDInstall". Click twice on the icon and read the text. Type in what you are asked to, and hit RETURN. The installation program will do the rest. Once the installation process is complete, you will notice that a directory has been created on your hard disk called "VideoPAGE". You may now run VideoPAGE from the Icon in the directory, or from your CLI. Please Note, that when running VideoPAGE from a hard disk, you should have one of the VideoPAGE font diskettes in one of your drives before starting the program. Starting Up VideoPAGE After turning on your Amiga, insert the VideoPAGE program disk in the main disk drive (DF0:), and one of the Font Diskettes in the second disk drive (DF1:). The drive will operate for a few moments and the screen will display the main VideoPAGE screen. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 10 ------------------------------ A Simple Titling Job The first screen you see is the Font Selection screen. Note that the "LED" next to the "#1" on the right hand side of the screen is colored yellow, this means that you are now being asked to press on the font size and type of the first font in the cartridge. To the left of the font cartridge, you should see four lines of different fonts containing four sets of square buttons with "LED"s. These buttons are used to select the font and size to be loaded into the font position. Move the mouse to one of these squares and click the left mouse button. You will notice that the "LED" on the square button has changed color from green to red. You have just selected the font to be loaded into the first cartridge position. Now click the circle next to the item marked "#2". You will notice that the light next to the "#1" has been turned off, and that a tick mark appears next to it. You will also notice that the color of the circle that you have just pressed has changed. Select a second, third, and fourth font in the same manner that you selected the first font. At this stage, you must tell VideoPAGE that you have finished your selection of fonts. Do this by clicking the mouse on the button named "LOAD" that appears on the font cartridge. The disk drive will start and load the fonts. Wait until the disk drive has stopped, and click the "EXIT" button in order to exit the screen and finish the font selection process. Now that you have loaded the fonts that you wish, you may start typing text into the full screen editor. Use the commands that appear in "Chapter 3" to manipulate your text. If the screen becomes messy at any time, use the "5" key on the numeric key pad to tidy things up. After you have finished entering text into the first page, press F4. This will store the first page, and clear the screen, allowing you to enter the next page of text. Enter three or four pages, changing between different fonts (using F9) and font colors (using F6) as you wish. We will now create an effects scenario. To do this, start by pressing the F10 key. The effects screen will now appear. Click the mouse on any effect, say "ZIP". Now put the mouse pointer on the rightmost scale that appears to the left of the screen. Keep the mouse button despressed, as you move the scale up to the top of the screen. You have now told VideoPAGE how fast the effect will be run. Do the same with the leftmost scale. The left scale tells VideoPAGE how long the page is to remain on the screen, or exit for. After you have defined the effect for your first screen, press the large "+" that appears on the top of the screen. You will notice that the number in the small window has changed to 2. Select a different effect in the same way that you did before. DO the same for each page, clicking on the "+" after each page, until the last page of text you entered is reached. After entering the last effect on the last page, press the button marked "OK". The screen will revert to the last page displayed. Now that you have defined VideoPAGE Users Manual page 11 ------------------------------ the effects scenario, you may run it. Press the F1 key, and sit back. If all has gone well, you should see the effects that you described to the system being performed. After the last page has been displayed, the screen will go blank. This is a sign that VideoPAGE has finished running your scenario. You may now go back to the editor and change or add text. To do this, press the F1 key again. F1 acts as a toggle between the scenario run command and the editor commands. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 12 ------------------------------ Chapter 3 - The Editor Inserting a New Line of Text Since the editor is line based, you will find that you cannot type in text that is longer than the line. Moreover, you cannot move down a line, unless you have opened a line after the current one. In order to open a new line after the current line, press . If you wish to move the line, move the cursor to the first position of the line and press . Fitting Extra Characters on the Line Sometimes you may wish to squeeze in extra letters that just don't fit. Using the Pixel adjusting functions, you can now do so. Move each character closer to it's neighbor, and then try adding the extra character. Creating Blocks of Color If you wish to create a block of color that fills the entire page, you may use the "|" key (it is the "shifted" reverse backslash key, next to the backspace). This is a special graphics character that allows you to create long stretches of color per line. Once you have created a few lines of color, you may pixel adjust them upwards until they are joined. Please note that there are two disadvantages in doing this. First, since in effect you have entered many characters on the line (Sometimes over 100!) the time it takes to render the line is much longer than usual, and secondly, you will not be able to see the block as a contiguous block when using the smooth scroll effect. Using the Editor to Capture one Page of Text to Video Sometimes, you may wish to just capture one page to your video tape, without going through the process of running an "Effects Scenario". VideoPAGE allows this by giving the option of "hiding" the cursor and the status stripe. Use the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-S keys to hide them. Note that all of the editor functions will still be active, so that changing text, moving to the next or previous pages etc. are all possible. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 13 ------------------------------ VideoPAGE comes complete with a full screen, WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), proportional spaced, line oriented editor. You may use this editor to enter the text that you wish to appear on your titles. The editor contains different commands that allow you to accurately position your text, and see exactly how it will appear on the final video. You will find that using the editor is pretty muck like using any standard word processor. There are of course, a few major differences. You may change the color and font of the current text by using the F6 (Color) and F9 (Font) keys while typing. Following is a short reference of the editor commands used in VideoPAGE. Left-Arrow Moves the cursor one letter to the left. Right-Arrow Moves the cursor one letter to the right. Up-Arrow Moves the cursor to the beginning of the previous line. Down-Arrow Moves the cursor to the beginning of the next line. PgUp (On the Numeric Keypad) - go to the previous page of text. PgDn (On the Numeric Keypad) - go to the next page of text. Ctrl-PgUp (On the Numeric Keypad) - go to the first page of text. Ctrl-PgDn (On the Numeric Keypad) - go to the last page of text. Home (On the Numeric Keypad) - go to the first line of the current page. End (On the Numeric Keypad) - go to the last line of the current page. Ctrl-J Jump to page. (enter the number page required). Up-Arrow ("8" on the numeric keypad) - move this line up by one line of pixels, used for fine adjustment. Shift-Up-Arrow ("8" on the numeric keypad) - move all lines from this line upwards, up by one line of pixels. Down-Arrow ("2" on the numeric keypad) - move the line down by one line of pixels. Shift-Down-Arrow ("2" on the numeric keypad) - move all lines from this line downwards, down by one line of pixels. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 14 ------------------------------ Left-Arrow ("4" on the numeric keypad) - move this line left by one pixel from the cursor. Right-Arrow ("6" on the numeric keypad) - move this line right by one pixel from the cursor. Shift-Left-Arrow Move cursor to the beginning of the line. Shift-Right-Arrow Move cursor to the end of the line. Alt-Left-Arrow Move cursor to the beginning of the previous word. Alt-Right-Arrow Move cursor to the beginning of the next word. Ins ("0" on the numeric keypad) - toggles between insert and overwrite modes. Del Delete the character under the cursor. Backspace Delete the character preceding the cursor. Ctrl-K Delete this line. Ctrl-Y Delete all text from the current cursor position to the end of the line. Ctrl-Del (on the numeric keypad) - delete this page. Ctrl-C Show / Hide cursor toggle. This is used for instances where you wish to record just one page directly onto your video, without running any effects. Ctrl-S Show / Hide status stripe. Ctrl-M Center (or Mid) Justify the current line. Ctrl-L Left Justify the current line. Ctrl-R Right Justify the current line. Ctrl-N No justification. 5 (numeric keypad) Clean up current Screen. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 15 ------------------------------ Choosing the Different Effects The Effects requester is called up by pressing F10. You will notice that the displayed screen has a set of buttons on the right, each with it's own name and "LED". These buttons describe the different effects that are available per page. Clicking on one of the buttons, say "CUT-IN", will tell the system that you wish the active page to roll in. Clicking on the button will also "turn on" the small light on that button. Note that you may hide or show the effects selection requester by pressing the SPACE BAR at any time. Defining Effect Timing After selecting the effect, you may set the speed of the effect, and the amount of time that the page is to remain on the screen for. This is done by moving the small sliders in the scales to the left of the requester with the mouse. Note that you may either "grab" the slider and move it up and down, or you may "click" just above or below the slider for more accurate adjustment. The Right-Hand scale represents the relative speed of the effect. The Left-Hand scale represents the amount of time that the page will remain on the screen. We call this the "Dwell-Time". The dwell time is incremented in two second intervals, with the top of the slider being 30 seconds, and the bottom of the scale being zero seconds or "No-Wait". Moving from Page to Page You will notice that the page number appears in a small window at the top of the effects requester. You may page back and forth by clicking on the "+" and "-" buttons. While moving back and forth. the active page will appear behind the requester. At any time, you may edit the effects scenario for a page by moving back to the page and changing either the effect or the timing. Another way of moving from page to page, is by clicking the mouse in the page number window, and typing in the number of the page you would like to change. Pressing will take you to the desired page. Running the Scenario Once you have finished defining the different effects and their timings, you should click on the "OK" button in order to exit. You will be returned to the editor, where you can make text changes as before. When you are ready to run the scenario, press the "F1" key. The scenario will run through the different effects that you defined. When the scenario has finished, the screen will go blank. To return to the editor, press the "F1" key again. Note that once you have defined the scenario, any changes in the text of the pages will be reflected immediately during the scenario run. You don't need to change anything, just press the "F1" key again. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 16 ------------------------------ The "NO EFFECT" Button You will notice that the leftmost, bottomost effect button is labeled "NO EFFECT", and when entering a new scenario, the "LED" on this button is lit. When running the scenario, the system will skip over any page that has a "NO EFFECT" effect defined. Thus if you wish to see only a small portion of your scenario, you may change those pages that you wish to hide to "NO EFFECT". Joystick and GPI Control On some occasions, you may wish to activate the effects scenario by some external means or "remote control". VideoPAGE allows you to define joystick activation for your scenario. (Using a Joystick in joystick port #2). What this means, is that when a page has been defined as being joystick activated, the system will wait for your click on the joystick button before that page will appear in the scenario. You define the page as being joystick activated by pressing the "J" key when that page is displayed on the effects screen. You will notice that a "J" has appeared in the window at the top of the screen. If you wish to cancel joystick activation, press the "J" key again, and the "J" will disappear from the window. You may wish to define joystick control for all of the pages in your scenario. Pressing "CTRL-J" will toggle all of the pages in the current scenario for joystick control. For those users that are using professional editing equipment, and wish to use a GPI interface to activate the scenario, you may make up a simple connector that fits into the Amiga joystick port (9 Pin Connector). Connect the ground pin 8 and the trigger to pin 6 of the connector. IMPORTANT NOTE !!!!! If you have defined joystick control for your scenario by mistake, and do not have a joystick in the second mouse port, you may find yourself in a situation where you have started running the scenario (F1) only to find a blank page that does not seem to change for a very long time. DO NOT REBOOT!! - simply unplug the mouse from it's original port, and plug it into the second joystick port, and click the left mouse button. Your scenario should then run smoothly. Running the Smooth Scroll effect You can define the smooth scroll by clicking on the "SCROLL" button in the effects screen for each page that will scroll. The first page in the scroll defines the speed that the scroll will run at, and the time that the system will wait after the last scrolled page has scrolled off the screen. We suggest that you use even numbered scroll speeds (2, 4, 6, 8), as these will give you the best results. VideoPAGE Users Manual page 17 ------------------------------ Using odd numbers may make the screen flicker during the scroll. The scroll routine will work on all speeds, although complicated text (lots of different colored styles and sizes on the same line) is best scrolled at the lower speeds (up to 12). Please also note that the smooth scroll will display all lines in the text evenly spaced, and that any pixel adjustment done up or down, will not be taken into consideration. Please note that there are some extreme cases, when the scroll may jump slightly at some stage or other during the effects run. If this happens, you may remedy it by inserting a blank line in one of the first pages, preferably in a different font size. Effects Available Following is a brief description of the effects that are currently available in the VideoPAGE program: Scroll Connects more than one screen together in order to give a smooth scroll of all those connected. Replicates the classic scroll effect at the end of most TV shows and movies. Cut In More commonly known as cut-in, this effect simply flashed the given screen to the monitor. Zip Moves the screen in from left, one letter at a time. Roll Scrolls the screen in from the bottom. Wipe Scrolls the screen in from left, right, top, and bottom. Check Checkers the screen inwards from left to right, right to left, top to bottom, and bottom to top. Inward Wipes the screen inwards from both the left and right sides simultaneously. TopDown Wipes the screen inwards from both the top and the bottom simultaneously. Split The screen is revealed, where the former screen is split up into four pieces. Zoom In The screen zooms in from the sides. Zoom Out The same as Zoo In, but in reverse.
