Workbench Management System V2.0 DOCS typed by HORST BRACK der BESTRAFER Introduction The WorkBench Management System (WMS) is designed to help you use your Amiga easily and with maximum efficiency! Once installed, it will be your constant companion, saving you precious time, eliminating confusion and helping you "get the job done". Amiga users, as a group, represent a vast range of skill levels and requirements. At the extreme novice level are users who are still learning how to click a mouse. At the other end of the spectrum are power-users, typically running multiple, complex applications simultaneously, squeezing every microsecond of performance out of their Amigas. The novice needs friendly assistance in his struggle to master this marvelous but sometimes intimidating computer. The power-user is typically running several steps ahead of the machine and wants to get it done NOW! WMS addresses these needs with a powerful, consistent and easy-to-use application interface. WMS is always available, so you don't have to go "digging" through layers of windows or directories to find it. Accessing its services and helpful information are as simple as pointing and clicking. Typing is minimized. In addition, WMS is customizable. WMS has a preconfigured set of tools to which you can easily add others. WMS can be thought of as having three states: dormant, ready and active. In its dormant state, WMS is represented by a small icon, labeled "WMS", in the WorkBench menu bar. A click on this icon reveals a list of labeled boxes and arrows. In this manual, we will refer to them as "buttons" (technically speaking, they are called "gadgets"). This list of buttons is displayed when WMS is in its ready state and may be positioned in different places on the WorkBench screen, depending on which WMS panel you choose. Clicking on one of WMS's feature buttons will cause it to enter the active state. In three clicks of the mousebutton (or less), WMS can be at your beck and call. What's in the box? In this package, you should find (1) 3.5" floppy disk, this manual and a user registration card. PLEASE take time to fill in the registration card and return it to us! This will enable us to inform you of future updates to WMS and allow you to register on our technical support bulletin board system(s). Installation ------------ Please follow these guidelines for installing the Workbench Management System. To run the WMS system from floppy, simply click on the WMS icon or open a shell/cli window and type 'run >nil: nil: [drive path]:wms/wms This will allow the WMS system to run completely in the background and out of the way of all other applications. These entries are NOT required to use the WMS system normally from workbench or CLI. * NOTE for WorkBench V2.0 Users! * ---------------------------------- If you are using V2.0 of the operating system and you do not wish to edit your startup-sequence, there is an alternate installation method. Simply move ALL files into the WBStartup drawer. Then do a INFO on the WMS icon using the menu option and ADD the tooltype DONOTWAIT. Type this command as shown and then save. DO NOT create a WMS directory. The main WMS file must be in the root of the WBStartup drawer and all other files and directories must accompany WMS. WMS will run with versions 1.2 through 2.0 of the Amiga's operating system. It is fully compatible with accelerator cards and most other Amiga add-ons. WMS will run in as little as 512K memory, though at least 1 MB (1024K) is recommended. Operation --------- At the heart of WMS's operation is its button list. WMS can be configured to your liking. Users can set up WMS to have vertical rows, horizontal rows, rectangles or boxes of buttons. Even the ICONIFY button 'ICON' can be placed and saved at the position you desire! For now however, let's move on to a description of the WMS layout. At the top of WMS's button list, you will notice the word "Icon" and two arrow buttons. You should also see a small empty box outline which we call the 'SHIFT' button. Clicking on the "Icon" button will place WMS in an "iconified" state. This is represented as a small rectangle, labeled "WMS", in the WorkBench menu bar. The up and down arrows scroll WMS's button list up and down, respectively, when there are more than ten buttons in the button list. If there are only ten buttons (or less), clicking on the scrolling arrows has no effect. The 'SHIFT' button (the square blank button) allows you to do a few things for your configuration of WMS. Lets say that you have 70 buttons all created. Instead of having to scroll through each level (or page) with the up and down arrows, we can now jump right to the level via the shift button. Lets say we want to go to the fifth level of our 70 buttons. Just click once on the SHIFT button, and then once on the number of the button you want to go to. For example, the vertical buttons visible on a standard non-interlace screen are 10. If we want level 5, we hit the shift button and click on the 5th button from the top. WMS then automatically moves to the 5th page of buttons! At the bottom of WMS's button list, you will observe two arrows, one pointing to the left, the other pointing to the right. These allow you to position WMS's button list to the left or right side of the screen, according to your preferences. To activate an application associated with one of WMS's programmed buttons, simply click ONCE on the appropriate button. It is important to note the difference in behavior between WorkBench icons, which require a double-click to start an application, and WMS's buttons, which require only a single click. Each click of a WMS button will cause its programmed operation to occur. For instance, clicking on the Calculator button three times will cause three copies of the Calculator program to be loaded and run. NOTE: The Calculator button is set up for the 1.3 operating system. If you are running Workbench 2.0 or if you have moved the 1.3 Calculator from the Utilities directory, you will need to change the directory as described below in the button editor section. Configuring WMS to your liking ------------------------------ ICONIFY First, let's setup our iconify button so that when WMS is in the iconified state, the button appears where we want it to be! The WMS iconify button can be placed anywhere on the workbench screen you desire! To set this up is very simple. Click on the shift button on the WMS panel (the small unmarked box). It should now be highlighted. Then click on the ICON button. WMS will now go to the iconified state. Now notice that the iconified button is a different color than normally would appear. This tells you that WMS is ready for you to pick up and place the iconify button where ever you wish. Simply pick up the icon button using the left mouse button. Move the iconify button to your desired location and release. Once you have placed the button where you desire, click on the iconify button with the RIGHT mouse button and the iconify button will change back to normal colors. To save this position, you will need to enter the 'button editor' and hit the save button. Your iconify button's position will then be saved to a config file which loads automatically whenever WMS is activated. Menu Options ------------ Button Editor Move your mouse pointer as far left as possible and click once. This will activate WMS and allow you to use the menu options. From the menu select the option 'Button Editor'. A new window will open showing you many options. This editor is used to create the 'programmable buttons' utilized in WMS and to set up the screen layout and configuration that you desire. For now however lets just concentrate on the set-up of WMS's layout. While in this editor, a new menu will appear. Use your right mouse button to show the menu. In this menu, you will see two new options. The first selection will allow you to layout the actual look of WMS on our screen. The sort option will be discussed later in the manual. In the 'Display Buttons' menu selection, you will see many different options. Here is a run down of what each option does: Vertical Single - What you have now. A single row of vertical buttons. Vertical Double - Will give you two rows side by side of vertical buttons. Horizontal - Gives you a single row of horizontal buttons which can be placed at either the top or the bottom of your screen. Horizontal Double - Give you two rows of horizontal buttons which can be place at either the top or the bottom of your screen. *Note - To move these two horizontal options to the bottom or the top of your screen, simply click once on the 'shift' button and then on the corresponding up or down arrow. Floating Window - This is the most powerful option of all. With this feature you can set up your WMS button panels anyway you wish. For example, select the floating window option for now. Once you have done that click on the close gadget of the button editor, then select "OK" when asked if you wish to save your changes. This will save your configuration. You should now see vertical row of buttons again. However now, the layout should be a bit different. You will notice that the window now has a border around it. There are now front and back gadgets plus a number. The number represents the row of buttons you are currently in. This number will increase or decrease as you cycle through the levels of buttons. With this configuration, you may now pick up and move the window to any location on your screen. Once you have placed the window in the location you desire, entering the 'button editor' and hitting save will save the location to your config file. Let's say however that you would like to have (3) three rows of buttons vertically, or maybe horizontally! Or how about a square box of WMS buttons, or a rectangle or even a FULL screen full! Well now you can do all of them and more! First, insure that WMS is active and move to the menus once again. You will now notice that while in the floating window option, a new menu choice has appeared called 'Window Setup'. With this option, you are now able to give WMS parameters on exactly what type of button layout you would like to have! To use this option, simply type in the number of rows and columns desired, exit out and there you are! Remember to enter the button editor and hit 'Save' so that your custom design is saved to the config file. * Important * When designing a WMS button layout, if you wish to increase the layout size you must move the floating window as far up and to the left on your screen as possible. If you do not and you try to create a screen larger than what exists, the setup window will default back to the largest allowable size for the current window position. If you use 640x400 screens or larger, WMS will detect that and allow you to create as many buttons as will fill the screen! In hi-res mode, you can get up to 154 buttons displayed on the screen at once! Even more can be obtained in overscan. Also in the same function, WMS will automatically detect and adjust itself for 4, 8 or even 16 color workbench systems! Again once you have completed your layout and setup, enter the 'Button Editor' and save your configuration by hitting the save button. Programmable Buttons -------------------- The Button Editor As mentioned earlier, you can extend WMS's capabilities by modifying or extending its list of programmed buttons. To do this, you will have to use the Button Editor. The Button Editor is activated from the "WMS Options" menu. Novice users: activate WMS and then hold down the right mouse button. The WMS menu will appear. Position the mouse pointer over the "Button Editor..." entry and release the right mouse button. Hot tip: by moving the mouse pointer to the extreme left hand side of the screen, then clicking, WMS will become active. To activate the floating window, click on the title bar or on the area around the shift button. When the Button Editor is activated, a small window will appear on your screen. At the left hand side of this window is a scrolling list containing the names of all programmed buttons. In a moment, we will program a new button and add it to our button list. But first, let's define the other features of the Button Editor window. List Name - The List Name box displays the name of the button being programmed. If you select a name from the scrolling button list, it will be copied here. If you are creating a new button, you will type its name into the List Name box. New - The New button prepares the Button Editor for creating a new button. Int - This new feature allows you to add any one of the eight built-in WMS programs. Click on this button to cycle through the choices. Stack Size - The Stack Size box contains the amount of stack memory, in bytes, required by the application which will be started by this button. The default value is 4000 bytes, but a particular application may need more. Refer to the application's user manual or examine the Stack setting in the applications icon (use the WorkBench 'Info' command). Directory - The Directory button allows you to locate the application to be run by providing a pop-up file requester. Command - The Command gadget contains the actual text of the command that will be used to run the application. WMS will normally fill this in for you when you select an application via the Directory button. However, if the application requires special command-line options (also called 'flags'), you can edit this value prior to saving it. Move Buttons - The Move buttons (up/down) allow you to reposition a button relative to the position of the other programmable buttons. This can be used in conjunction with the sort button which will sort the list of your buttons alphabetically by first letter. Add - The Add button is used to enter a new button definition to the list. Update - The update button applies any changes you have made to the currently selected button. * Please note that if you have created or edited a button, you must use either the Add or Update buttons to enter your changes. Delete - The Delete button is used to delete the currently selected button and that includes the built-in WMS programs. Save - The Save button causes your button list changes to be permanently recorded and also is used to save your custom configurations to a config file that is automatically loaded when WMS is activated. Button Editor Tutorial ---------------------- Now that you're familiar with the various parts of the Button Editor, let's try programming a button. Be sure that you have WMS in its ready state (button list is visible). Get to the WorkBench screen and select the WMS menu by clicking the right mouse button. Drag the mouse pointer to the 'Button Editor' entry and release the right mouse button. If you were successful, a small window labeled "WMS Buttons Editor" popped up on your screen. To start, click the 'New' button to clear all editing fields in the Button Editor window. We will be programming a button to start up a clock, so we'll give the name 'Clock' to our new button. Click in the field named 'List Name' and type 'Clock'. Follow this by pressing the return key. Our next step is to tell WMS where the Clock program can be found. To do this, click on the 'Directory' button. You will notice that a file requester window pops open. At the top left corner of the requester, you will notice a button labeled 'Drawer'. Each click of the 'Drawer' button changes its label to 'Physical' then 'Disks' then 'Assigns' and back to 'Drawer'. With each click, you will also notice that the list below the 'Drawer' button changes. This provides you with a powerful and fast method for navigating the top level of your file system. You will also notice that just to the right of the 'Drawer' button is another button labeled 'Parent'. A click on this button will "climb one level" when you are navigating a multi-level directory. Be sure that the 'Drawer' button is currently labeled 'Drawer' (click it, if necessary, until the word 'Drawer' appears). Using either the slider or the up/down arrows that appear to the right of the drawer list, scroll the drawer list until the 'Utilities' drawer comes into view. Click once on the word 'Utilities' and you will see a list of filenames appear in the filename list box which is to the right of the drawer list box. Scroll the filename list box until the filename 'Clock' comes into view. At this point, we can select the filename 'Clock' in one of two ways: click once on the name 'Clock', then click once on the OK button or, click twice (in rapid succession) on the name 'Clock' Either of these actions will cause the full command for running the Clock utility to be placed into the Button Editors Command field. It should look something like: Run Nil: "SYS:Utilities/Clock" Our next requirement is to assure that the program has enough stack space for proper execution. To determine the amount of stack required, use these guidelines: If the program normally runs under the WorkBench (is started by double-clicking an icon), use the WorkBench Info command to examine the program's icon. Use the value that appears in the 'Stack' field. If the program is normally run from the CLI (or other shell), examine the programs icon, if it has one. If no icon is available, refer to the programs documentation to see if any special stack requirements are specified. If not, use the default value (4000) provided by the Button Editor. If the program crashes unexpectedly, try increasing the value (double it) and see if there is an improvement. We now have all of the information required for the creation of our new button. Click the 'Add' button. You will be asked if you wish to add the Clock button to the list. Click the 'OK' response. The Clock button name is now added to the list at the left. Notice that the button is placed after the previously-highlighted entry in the list. If this is not desired, use the 'Move' buttons to reposition it to its desired location. At last, we have finished programming our new button. By clicking the 'Save' button, you can now save your changes to the permanent button list. The next time you start up WMS, your new button will be there, ready and waiting to do your bidding! You can also add (or delete) any of the eight (8) built-in programs. To add an internal button, simply click on the INT button until the application you want appears. Then select the ADD button and you will notice the button is added to the list! The names of these programs are reserved; don't change the names or use them for other applications to insure proper operation. To change a button, simply click on a name in the Button Editor list, make the necessary changes and click the 'Update!' button. When changing a buttons definition, be sure not to alter the button name in the 'List Name' field. To rename a button, change the name of the button and select Add to add it, then re-select the old name in the list and delete it via the Delete button. If you want to completely reassign a button (discarding its current definition), you must select the button name from the list, then click the 'Delete' button. Having deleted the button definition, you may then proceed to create a new one, as outlined in the above procedure. The 8 built-in applications are also 'deleted' using this button. However this does not delete the built-in program, rather it just gets rid of its button. The application can be returned at any time using the INT button. SORT ---- Once you have completed making of your buttons, you have a couple of other features that you might want to use. The first is the SORT command. This is activated from the menu while in the button editor. When selected, the buttons will be alphabetically sorted by name. Another option that can be used is also very powerful. Panel buttons can be created for different levels of buttons. For example, you can arrange your buttons so that your buttons on level 2 are all video applications, level 3 is business, level 4 is games or whatever you want. Then by creating a Panel Button on level 1, you can go right to the area that you need. You can make a button that says Business, another that says Games, another for Video and so on. Then when you click on these 'Panel Buttons', WMS does not load a program but will instead go directly to the button page you indicated! If you clicked on Video WMS would move to the level with all your video stuff and would act likewise for any of the other Panel buttons you have. *NOTE: For this feature to work properly, all buttons on each level (except the last) must be filled for the panel button to find it. If one of your levels is not full, you can create blank buttons to fill them and then the panel button will work on that level. In addition, you must NOT use the Sort option after setting up your buttons, nor can you change the total number of buttons per level, or the panel buttons will no longer find the proper levels. To create a 'panel button', simply click on the NEW button to clear the editor. You need to also delete the run >nil: Nil: "MRBackup" -d RAM: When editing the command line, always be sure that the redirection specifications ("Nil:") come immediately after the "Run" command. Note also that any switches or load parameters must follow outside the quotes and one space past the last quote. We also recommend that users of Workbench 1.3 make the "Run" command resident to reduce disk access and improve speed. BUILT-IN APPLICATIONS --------------------- MemoEd Text Editor TTR's MemoEd text editor provides a convenient, rapid-access solution for simple text-editing chores. It is not intended to replace word processors or high-powered programming editors. However, for the quick shopping list, reminders, memoranda, etc., it gets the job done quickly and painlessly. Using MemoEd is so intuitive that it practically requires no explanation. However, just to be thorough, we'll cover all of MemoEd's features. The large box in the center of MemoEd's window is where all typing takes place. There are three fields above this window. Two of them are labeled 'Search For:' and 'Replace With:' while the third is unlabeled and contains a number (default value = 70). We'll discuss these in a moment. Notice that there are vertical and horizontal scroll bars to the right and bottom, respectively, of the typing area. These allow you to "slide" the viewing area around when your document is too large to completely fit in the text area. To type into the viewing area, simply move the pointer to the spot where you want to type, click the left mouse button, then start typing. The three fields previously alluded to are used in conjunction with MemoEd's menu options. The 'Search For:' field holds the text to be searched for when performing a search or replace operation. The 'Replace With:' field holds the text which replaces the 'Searched For:' text when performing a replace operation. You can change their contents simply by clicking in their respective boxes (gadgets) and typing in a new value. The third field at the top of the screen is the right margin specification. This value is used when you wish to "word-wrap" your text. You will also notice that MemoEd displays the current time and total memory available in its menu bar. MemoEd has five menus, named 'Project', 'Tools', 'Edit', 'Cut/Paste' and 'Extras'. Each of these menus holds a functionally related set of commands which support MemoEd's creation and manipulation of docu- ments. All of the menu items can be selected with the mouse pointer. In addition, some of them (outlined later) allow you to use a keyboard shortcut (hotkey) as a convenience. Project Menu ------------ The Project Menu holds commands for loading, merging and saving files. When you select any of these menu items, a file requester will appear to assist you in specifying the source or destination filename. Open - This option allows you to open (load) an existing document into MemoEd. This will clear the current document (if any) without saving it, so be careful. Save - The Save option will save the current document under its current name. The previous contents of the document will be overwritten. Save As - Use the Save As command when saving a new document or when you want to save the current document under a new name. Merge - The Merge command will insert the text of another document at the insertion point (marked by the cursor) of the current document. Quit - The Quit command causes MemoEd to exit back to the WMS button panel. Tools Menu ---------- The Tools menu holds commands used to navigate, format or print the current document. Undo - The Undo command reverts or negates the effects of the last Clear or Delete command. You can think of it as an "oops-fixer-upper". Goto - This item has two options. The first option, Goto Top, will move the cursor to the top of the current document. The Goto Bottom option will move the cursor to ...you guessed it... Antarctica! Print - The contents of the MemoEd edit buffer are output to your printer. Your current Printer Preferences settings will govern the appearance of the printed text. Wrap - The Wrap command will reformat the entire document such that no line exceeds the length specified in the margin field at the top of the screen. The default right margin is 70 columns. Clear - The contents of the MemoEd edit buffer are erased and the text editing area is cleared. Edit Menu --------- Search - The Search command has two options. The first, 'From Cursor', will search for the first occurrence of the text pattern in the 'Search For:' field, starting at the current cursor location. The second option, 'All Text', will perform the search starting at the top of the document. Replace - The Replace command will replace words in your document either by single word or globally throughout the entire document. Cut/Paste --------- Cut and paste will allow you to mark lines or blocks of text which can then be copied to other locations in your document or cut out of the document altogether. Please note that the Block Cut/Copy/Paste system works with whole lines only. Begin LBlock - Marks the beginning of the text you want to cut or copy. The "L" stands for "Line". No matter where you are on a line, it is marked at the line beginning. Copy LBlock - Copies the block of text from the beginning of the line you have selected through the end of the current line, to memory. Cut Lblock - Deletes the block of text from the beginning of the line you selected (with the "Begin LBlock" command) through the end of the current line. Text can be returned with the Undo command. Insert LBlock - Inserts the copied text at the beginning of the current line. Delete Line - Deletes the current line of text. Paste Line - Pastes the last cut line of text. Extras Menu ----------- Other - This command pops up an information requester displaying WMS copyright information, available memory and the current time and date. Quickie tip: You can create a button to edit a specific file (like your Startup-Sequence file) with MemoEd, without having to use the Open command. Bring up the WMS Button Editor window as described above. Then select the New button. Click in the List Name field and give your button a name (like "Ed Startup") and press the Return key. The Directory field should become active (if it is not, select it with the left mouse button). Type "MemoEd" into this directory field and press the Return key. The Command field should now be active. Press Right-Amiga-X to clear the field (or use the backspace and/or Del keys to clear it). Type in the name of the file you wish to edit (in this example, S:Startup-Sequence). Do not put quotes around either the MemoEd entry or the file to edit. Select the Add button to add the entry to the list, then move the list entry to the line you want it on via the Move buttons. Finally, save your changes and then test your button! TELEMATE ------- Telemate tracks all of your most frequently used phone numbers and addresses. With Telemate, they'll always be handy when you need them! In addition, Telemate keeps separate lists of business and personal phone numbers to enhance the organization of your personalized phonebook. When you click the Telemate button, a pop-up window with two buttons, labeled 'Business' and 'Personal' will appear. Simply click the appropriate category button to access the phone number / address list you're interested in. Once a category has been selected, a scrollable list of names and phone numbers will appear. Note that each entry may have two numbers. For the 'Business' list, you may want to list a voice line and a FAX line. For the 'Personal' list, you may wish to maintain a home number and a work number. You will notice the 'Print' button at the bottom left of the phone number list box. If you click this button, all phone numbers for the selected list will be sent to your printer. There is also a search field for your convenience. Select the field and type in a name or portion of a name you wish to find, then press Return. Continue to press Return to find additional matches. If there are no matches, the highlight bar will not change. To add or change entries in the phone list, simply click twice on the desired entry. When adding entries, you can click on any entry. This will activate the Telemate editor. The Telemate editor provides several information "fields" in the top half of its box and a set of buttons in the bottom half. The fields are all labeled and their contents are self-explanatory. To select a particular field for editing, simply position the mouse over that field and click once. As you enter each value and press the RETURN key, Telemate's entry cursor will automatically advance to the next field. Here is an explanation of Telemate's search box and editing buttons. Search - The search box provides a quick-lookup capability. Simply click in this box, type the name or number that you wish to search for and then press the RETURN key. All fields will be searched for the pattern you enter. New - The New button will clear the editor template and position the entry cursor to the first field. Delete - This button marks the current entry for deletion. However, to make the change permanent, you must also click the Save button. Should you change your mind, you can restore the entry simply by leaving and re- entering the Telemate editor. Sort - The Sort button causes all entries to be sorted by the Last Name or Company Name fields. You may sort records at any time. Print - The Print button sends the current entry to your printer. Be sure that your printer is connected and enabled prior to using the Print button. List'em - This button will immediately return you to the Telemate list window. Save - The Save button causes records all of your changes to the permanent Telemate data file. Info - The Info button presents a pop-up window which reports the amount of memory available (chip and fast) and the current date and time. Business or Personal - Each Telemate editor has a button to take you to the list of the "other" category. If you are in the Business editor, the "Personal" button will take you to the Personal list, and vice versa. Dial WARNING: The Dial button assumes that you have a modem connected to your Amiga and turned on. Do not use this button if these criteria are not met. If you have selected the 'Business' phone list, the number in the 'Phone' field (not the FAX number) is dialed. If you have selected the 'Personal' phone list then the 'Home Phone' number is dialed. Calendar - Reminder ------------------- The Calendar-Reminder provides a convenient place for you to jot down important dates, appointments, etc. When you click on the Calendar button a window containing a calendar for the current month and year appears. If you wish to access information for another month and/or year, this can be accomplished in a couple ways. You can click on the 'Change Month' arrow buttons to go forward or backward a month at a time. You can click on the 'Change Year' arrow buttons to go forward or backward a year at a time. Finally, you can click in the month or year boxes, type the new month or year, press RETURN and the requested calendar will be presented. By clicking once in any of the calendar day boxes, you will activate the appointment editor. Using this editor, you may add change or delete appointment entries. You will notice that blank entry lines already exist for 8 A.M. through 8 P.M. You may fill in these entries as appropriate. You may also insert new entries for other times, as needed. Each time you press the RETURN key, a new line is inserted. In fact, you can enter your appointment information in just about any format you desire. Decisive Environment Unit ------------------------- The Decisive Environment Unit (DEU) was developed with the new user in mind. It is also quite useful to the experienced user who may have forgotten a detail or two. The DEU is a small help system which provides the following buttons: - Error-DOS AmigaDOS error code definitions - Shell/CLI Shell command descriptions - ASCIIChart ASCII character values - ? Mystery button! - Info Miscellaneous info TTR Development intends to add other useful new features in the future and would like to incorporate user suggestions. Why not jot one down on your registration card - then send it in! We wouldn't want you to miss an important update to WMS. Error-DOS When you click on this button, WMS will open a screen containing a scrolling text box and several buttons. If you just want to memorize the list of AmigaDOS errors, you can scroll through them by clicking on the up/down arrows to the right of the large text box. If you wish to get information on a specific error code, click once in the box labeled "Enter AmigaDOS Error Code" and type in the number, pressing RETURN when you are done. If you enter a valid error code, information about the error will appear in the text box. Otherwise, the message "Not an existing error code..." will flash at the top of the screen. Clicking on the Print button will cause the entire list of error codes and descriptions to be printed on your printer (be sure it's hooked up and turned on). Click on the Exit button to return to the DEU selection window. Shell/CLI This button presents you with a screen quite similar to that described under Error-DOS. However, this screen allows you to find the definition (list of parameters, etc.) for a CLI or Shell command. To find information on a particular command, just type its name into the CLI/SHELL gadget in the center of the screen. If a description can't be found, the message "Not an existing CLI/Shell command..." will be flashed at the top of the screen. Clicking the Print button will cause the entire list of AmigaDOS commands and their syntax to be sent to your printer. Clicking on the Exit button will return you to the DEU selection window. ASCII Chart This button presents a screen with a scrolling text box and several buttons. You can scroll through the list of ASCII values by simply clicking on the up/down arrows on the slider gadget to the right of the text box. Most likely, you will want to perform one of these searches: - Find the value for a given character - Find a character that represents a given value To locate a character by its decimal value (0-127), simply enter the value in the "Search for Decimal" box and press the RETURN key. The text box will automatically scroll to display the appropriate character. To locate a value by its character representation, enter the character in the "Search for ASCII" box and press the RETURN key. The text box will automatically scroll to display the characters decimal, hexadecimal and binary values. To print the entire ASCII chart, simply click on the Print button. To return to the DEU's selection window, click on the Exit button. INFO Clicking on the INFO button will present you with a window containing: - TTR's company address and phone number(s) - Current date and time - Amount of memory available ? When you click on the Mystery Button, "The Most Incredible Thing" happens! Well...we like it. SqueezBox Shell The SqueezBox Shell provides you with a user-friendly but powerful interface to several of the Amiga's most popular file archivers. Archivers, if you don't already know, provide a very convenient method for "bundling" a group of related files into a single file, usually in a compressed form. They are especially useful and heavily used on bulletin board systems (BBS's) and commercial information systems. Since everything you need is packaged together, there isn't much chance that you'll end up missing a piece. The data compression feature cuts down on the time it takes to transfer the archive via modem. You may even want to maintain certain of your files in archived format, since valuable disk space will be saved. There are two distinct sections to the SqueezBox Shell: - Archiving Packs files into archives - Unarchiving Unpacks archives into individual files SqueezBox will archive files using either the Zoo or Lharc programs. Squeezbox can unpack ARC, Lharc, Warp or Zoo archives. These archiving programs are not provided with WMS. You can, however, obtain them from practically any BBS (including TTR's) or commercial information service. If you do not have a modem, TTR Development will be happy to provide them via mail for a nominal charge. Send a check or money order for $5.00 to the address listed in the Support section of this manual. These archiving formats are considered at this time to be the most popular. Based on user response, we may add other formats in the future. Archive filenames all have a distinct suffix which identifies the type of archive. These are: .ARC ARC .LZH Lharc .WRP Warp .ZOO Zoo Unarchiving To start, select the button with the archiver required to unpack your archive (refer to the suffix list above). A new screen with several buttons and text boxes will open. Though the wording is slightly different for each archiver, the information to be specified is generally the same: Program name - Pathname to the archiving program Switches - Command line options (consult archiver manual) Archive name - The name of the archive file Destination - The name of the directory where the files will be placed. Execute - Clicking this button starts the unarchiving process Exit - Returns you to the SqueezBox selection window Each textbox will have a default value. If any of the defaults are inappropriate, change them before you click on the Execute button. Notice that on the left hand side of the screen there is a list of four buttons. Each one has a corresponding text box (containing a file or directory name) on the right hand side of the screen. You may type values directly into the text boxes, or you may invoke a file requester to assist you by clicking the appropriate button. Archiving Currently, only Lharc and Zoo archives may be created with the SqueezBox Shell. Clicking either the Lharc or Zoo button will result in a new window with defaults set for the appropriate archiver. Theres a lot of information on this window. Here is a description of what you see: Archive Type This is the name of the archiver which will be used. You can change this directly by typing into the text box or you can use the Types menu (click the right mouse button in the menu bar). Output Filename This is the name that the archiver will give to the archive it will create. Simply click in the box and type the archive name. You need not type the archive suffix, as the archiver will append it auto- matically. Output Directory This is the name of the directory where the archive will be created. Simply click in the box and type the directory name. Compress Once all parameters have been specified, click on this button to create the archive. MainMenu Click on this button to return to the SqueezBox selection window. Directory These boxes allow you to navigate your directory hierarchy in order to select the files you wish to archive. Files This box displays a list of the files in the current directory. When you double-click on a file name, it appears in the large box on the right, indicating that it has been selected for archiving. Status / Output The boxes below this title are used to display archiver progress infor- mation and the names of the files selected for archiving. The GetDir button will cause the current directory to be re-scanned, refreshing the file list. The Parent button will select the directory which is the immediate parent of the current directory (climb a level). A Walk-Through -------------- Let's assume that you have set the Output Filename and Output Directory as necessary. Click on the Parent button until you see a listing of all the devices available. Click on the DH0: entry (or other disk partition name, if you prefer). Once the directory has been read, you will most likely see a list of directories in the Directory box and a list of files in the Files box. To create an archive, simply double-click on any of the file names in the Files box. As you do this, they will appear in the large box to the right. The files have not been moved at this point - they have just been selected for archiving. To remove a filename from the list, just double-click on its entry in the box on the right. Try selecting some files from other directories. Double-click on another directory name in the Directory box and select some files from that directory. When you are through selecting files, click on the Compress button. Progress information will appear in the Status boxes as the archive is created. SqueezBox Advantages Why would you use SqueezBox rather than typing the archiver command at the CLI or Shell? The biggest advantage comes from the ability to archive files that are scattered all over your disk! Using the CLI, you would first have to copy the files to a common location, create the archive, then delete the copies. SqueezBox creates archives which "remember" full directory paths to the archived files. These directories are automatically recreated (if necessary) when unarchiving. We have found SqueezBox to be an in- valuable tool which greatly optimizes our archiving chores. SqueezBox has the potential to incorporate many new features. Send us your ideas! File Manager ------------ You're going to love it! File Manager provides you with a powerful and easy-to-use browser interface to all of your files. It will allow you to display pictures, play sounds, show brush ANIMs, display text files and even run other programs, all at the click of a mouse! Heres a description of the File Manager window: Title/Status- This box displays the File Manager's title when it's idle. When processing, it displays status information. Current Directory - The name of the current directory is displayed here. You can also change the current directory by typing directly into this box. Directory List - The large box on the left hand side of the window displays the names of directories below the current directory. You may select a new sub- directory by double-clicking on one of the entries in this box. File List - The large box on the right hand side of the window displays the names of the files in the current directory. A double-click on a file entry will cause an action appropriate for the file type. If the file type is not handled by the File Manager, an error indicator appears. Parent - When you click on this button, the current directory is changed to its immediate parent and the directory and file lists are refreshed. Devices - Clicking on this button causes the list of known device names to be printed in the directory list. Quit - Clicking on this button returns you to the WMS button list. AnyTime! -------- OK, so we got a little silly! AnyTime displays the current date, Time and memory...... In Roman Numeral, English, Hex, Binary, Octal, Sec- onds, Military and Civilian times! TimeSet! -------- Should you need to reset your Amiga's built-in clock, TimeSet will make the chore fast and simple. TimeSet presents a small window containing a one-month calendar and time-adjustment buttons. Notice that the year and month values at the top of the calendar have left-pointing arrows on the left and right-pointing arrows on the right. Clicking on these arrows will decrease or increase their respective values. To select a specific day of the month, just click on the appropriate day number.
