S T A R  T R E K -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Game by Tobias J. Richter, Gervinusstrasse 46 A, 61oo Darmstadt, West-Germany Star Trek Document Stardate 11.O8.89 English Translation Stardate 01.06.90 --------------------------------------------------------------------------  E N G L I S H   D O C U M E N T A T I O N -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Star Trek - The Game: The finished code is about 160K in length, the sources are around 1/2 Mb. To enable the game to run with only 512K, I have left out some of the unneccessary sounds, it does nothing to the actual gameplay, but obviously it loses some of it's atmosphere. If you have more than 1.5 Mb, you can copy the data disk (STDATA:) into RAM and this will speed up the game. Star Trek can be fully steered by the mouse, but the ships movement can also be steered by a Joystick in Port 2. There is no specific aim to the game, the most important thing is that you remain Captain of the Enterprise. To do this, you must carry out certain tasks, take care of the crew and in general, act the same as a responsible Captain would do. An irresponsible Captain will soon come to grief, mind you, so will an overcautious one! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Menu : Mainscreen 1 is the bridge, (the commanders seat). 4 Indicators are shown in the centre. Top indicator = Impulse Speed 2nd indicator = Warp speed 3rd indicator = Energy level recorder 4th indicator = Damage to the hull On the right is the Momentary situation alarm Situated below these is the Stardate indicator -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Engineering : You adjust the amount of repairs being carried out via the slide controls, but to be able do this, enough energy must be available. During major repairs crew members can receive injuries, so be carefull. Note that impulse speed can only be engaged when the ship is on warp 1. There are indicators for damage and shield configurations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Communications : Reports from the pipe are announced through here. The reports are not stored in memory, therefore you are advised to check up on these immediately. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Weapons & Defense : At this level you can enter the settings for the phasers and photon-torpedos. You can set the shields and the ACTIVATE or DEACTIVATE them, only those shields that are activated will sap energy. There is a seperate shield for each of the four sides of the ship. Whilst active, the shields will protect the ship from enemy attacks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Quit/Save : From here your game can be saved and reloaded, it will always ask for "STGAME", it is important that you do not alter this name. You can only save/load one file that is stored under the name STGAME. To get back to the game, click on CANCEL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Helmsman : As in weapons & defense you can set and fire the weapons system from here. TACTICAL will open a small screen on which you can see the distance and identify other ships, on the bottom left, the energy is indicated, the lines at the bottom put up the shields. At the bottom right is a red rectangle to show that the shields are active. The wide yellow rectangle adjusts the aim of the photons and the smaller yellow square adjusts the aim of the phasers. On the right of the helmsmans window are the speed controls for the impulse and in the middle is the main steering control, which you need for entering into orbit, or docking procedures. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Turbolift :  Use this to get to other parts of the ship. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Bridge : You can switch to a top view, you have the same functions from here as you have from the commanders chair. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Navigator : On the top left is the speed control for the impulse and warp drives. Using the CHANGE TARGET, you can put in new destination orders, by moving the mouse over the on screen map, your destination will show up automatically, selecting this will then bring about an automatic course correction. The position of the Enterprise is shown by a red cross and the selected destination by a green cross. Positions that are linked with missions are shown in colour, ie: The destination planets are shown in YELLOW. The planets position is shown in BLUE. The enemy associations are shown in RED. NOTE: Flying at warp speed is only justified when a destination is chosen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Pause : When selected, the game will pause until you are ready to resume playing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Damage & Repair : On the left you can set the repairs, choosing 100% means that the chosen area will be at your disposal very quickly. Repairs use up energy and on top of this, the health of the crew suffers. You can see the degree of damage on the right hand side. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Science & Computer : This is Mr.SPOCKS domain, from here he gives out information about planets, spaceships, the attackers, plus anything else that might happen. Using the SUGGEST will get you advise on the best action to take. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Status : Important values for the ship are shown here, SPEED, COURSE, SHIELDS and STATUS (Alert). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Mainscreen 2: Gives overall view of the ship, the row of small gadgets along the left side serve to give you information about the different decks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Bridge : This will take you back to mainscreen number 1. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Officers Lounge : Here, by clicking on MISSIONS, you can see the details of the missions that you have carried out so far. Clicking again will bring up the next mission. CREW ATTITUDE will show you your popularity with the crew. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Transporter : From here you can transport objects or people, energy is needed for this, if there is not enough, you will have to call for a shuttle. Objects available for beaming up or down are shown in the respective window. You can choose a desired object by clicking on the arrow, the status will tell you if the transporter is OK and READY, the lighter the green is on the energy level indicator, the higher it's level. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Medical : Choosing BONES on the right will give the crews condition etc. If the crews health is poor, the guiding of the ship can become a problem. Dr.McCoy will offer you some advise on the right. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Engineering : See mainscreen 1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Cargo Bay : Use the indicator in the freight room to see what has been stored. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Landing Bay : With the shuttle you can take objects to and from the planets surface, the gadgets inside the shuttle are for, pushing to the left, right, front, (above) and zooming down. The idea is to leave the Enterprise and make a smooth landing, followed by an ever smoother return to the ship, if you crash, the shuttle will need repairing and another shuttle will be required for any more flights. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Credit :  This is where the number of tasks and incidents can be established, with (SOUND ON/OFF), you can turn off the background noises and with RESET, you can reset the game to Stardate 0, Orbit arounf Earth. (click on it twice). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Hangar : 4 shuttles are available here, if shown in RED, they are under repair, if they are shown in GREEN they are available for use. On each shuttle you can set the speed and gravitation, the further right the controls are set, the more sensitive the shuttles handling becomes. You have to choose a shuttle first, before going to the landing bay (except the shuttle you already choose is operable). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Tips : When you enter orbit of a planet try and keep it's edge in the middle of the screen, later a cross-hair and circle will appear for orientation, keep the cross-hair between the edge of the planet and the circle. When you try to get inside the dock it is sufficient to see the entrance, as the dock does not move (like in Elite), if you deviate too much, the landing will be aborted. If the transporter is damaged and all your shuttles are in for repair, you either have to wait, or call in at the dock for repairs. In the dock, all repairs are carried out at tremendous speed, energy is brought to it's highest level, this will take some time if there is a lot of damage. When an enemy attacks try and bluff it out first as this will save energy and raise the morale of your crew. You can try to bluff the enemy by selecting the corbomite-maneuvre message in the Communications menu. As you become more experienced, the tasks set by starfleet command will become even harder! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mama always told me not to look into the sun, but Mama, that's where the fun is... Enjoy the game!! Tobias Richter alias Trekking Tobi
