Safer modem use (continued). 

   This is part 2 of a 2 part set telling you how to connect a modem to the
   telephone line.
   
   This is an article to help people out there with modems who have
   problems with people picking up other phones while they are using the
   modem, causing errors or even drop-outs.

   In this article, it is assumed that the tests done in part 1 failed.
   That is:  That there are only 2 wires in the cable between the modem and
   its plug OR the test with the multi-meter showed that the relay did NOT
   open the connections between the wires.
   
   Before I go on I shall state that this is a project that is without any
   kind of warrenty, written or implied.  Please don't be put off by this,
   as the project is not complicated and only requires a simple
   understanding of electronics.
   
   I also suggest you read ALL the article before starting....
   
   If you can cut wires, screw holes in wood, use a multi-meter and are
   keen, you have no worries.
   
   What you shall need is:
   1/  A socket for the phone (you will most likely have this anyway.
   2/  2 sockets (special one numbered 611 on the underside) for the modem.
       You may have this already or maybe you will have another normal one.
   3/  Some telephone wire with 4 wires in it.  (about 1 metre)
   4/  a piece of wood, say 15 cm x 15 cm
   5/  some screws to screw the sockets to the wood
   6/  a plug
   7/  either a single pole change over or a double pole changeover switch.
   8/  a small jiffy box or the like
   
   and in the way of tools, again, you will need:  a multi-metre, a
   screwdriver, some wire cutters, a soldering iron and solder and
   strippers.
   
   Here you have determined that the modem does NOT support what I called
   "Line Switching" in part 1.
   
   You still must put the 2 wires on tags 2 & 6 of the plug all the same.
   
   I hope you have already determined the First Socket and have already
   done the wiring anyway.
   
   Now we get to the interesting bit, the use of the wood and the other
   sockets and the plug.
   
   What we are going to do is connect the 4 wires of the cable to the 4
   tags in the plug (use # 1 of the iron). You connect the wires to:
                            2 - White
                            3 - Red
                            5 - Black
                            6 - Blue
   The other end goes into the jiffy box.  But for now I will leave that
   and go to the other part.
   
   The wood and the sockets.  Refer to pic_4 as to how to put the sockets
   on the wood.  The wires to put in are shown in pic_5.
   
   ** please short out tags 2 & 3 and 5 & 6 on the 611 socket with a piece
   of bare wire.  **
   
   Now I suggest you wire up the connections between the sockets and the
   switch.  This way you cut off only what you need from the cable.  After
   that you can get ready to connect the remainder of the cable (that's the
   bit with the plug on it) to the other side of the switch and the socket.
   
   How it works:
   
   Well, the line comes in to your house and you have diverted it to your
   socket, making it the first socket.  The line then goes up onto the
   board and to the next 611 socket.
   
   Here it goes both into the modem and to the other 610 socket (your
   phone), after there it goes into the switch where depending on the
   switch either continues onto the rest of the house or stops there.
   
   You must understand also that "your phone" MUST be ON HOOK when the
   modem is on-line.  You can't get any better than that, sorry.  But what
   you do is firstly make sure no-one is on the line (like you would do
   anyway) and throw the switch, that way stopping any other phone being
   used.
