INTRODUCTION

     
     D.J. Joe is Amiga's fast real-time MIDI record and playback 
utility.  Designed for ease of use, D.J. Joe will monitor all of 
the Amiga's MIDI activity, including most MIDI signals such as 
pitch bend and keystroke velocity, from any MIDI capable 
synthesizer.  With absolutely no commands to memorize, D.J. Joe 
fully supports the mouse, menu, and Intuition environment of the 
Amiga, helping the end user to easily enjoy a MIDI recording 
studio without having to invest time in studying the basics of 
MIDI technology.

     D.J. Joe is the perfect companion to those that would like a 
small taste of what MIDI recording is all about, at absolutely no 
cost.  A simple MIDI interface attached to the Commodore Amiga 
has already attracted a large amount of innovative electronic 
musicians and Amiga software developers.

     What is MIDI?  It is an acronymn for Musical Instrument 
Digital Interface.  Since its introduction in 1983 it has become 
the accepted standard for electronic musical instruments to 
communicate to each other.  The MIDI standard was also designed to 
include the connection of multiple keyboards, auxiliary manual 
controllers, sequencers and drum machines.  MIDI and computers are 
firmly entrenched in the day-to-day production of musical scores 
for commercials, television, film, industrial shows and records.


PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

     D.J. Joe requires an Amiga compatible MIDI interface, and a 
musical keyboard synthesizer for score recording and playback.  
You will require a minimum of two MIDI cables to connect your MIDI 
equipment to the Amiga's MIDI interface.  If you are a newcomer to 
MIDI recording, perhaps one the best known inexpensive but 
powerful synthesizers is the Casio CZ-101, which offers a number 
of advanced programming features at an incredibly low price.  If 
your main concerns are cost and ease-of-use, D.J. Joe and an 
inexpensive MIDI synthesizer will turn your Commodore Amiga into 
an affordable desktop MIDI recording studio.


USING D.J. JOE

     D.J. Joe offers four integral functions for recording, 
playback, and storage of scores using the Amiga's disk-storage 
filing system.

     RECORD MIDI

          Record MIDI configures the Amiga's communications port 
to operate as a high speed MIDI device transferring information 
between the computer and connected musical instruments at a 31.2 
kilobyte baud rate.  After selecting the RECORD MIDI gadget with 
your mouse, D.J. Joe will operate as a real-time MIDI recording 
device, saving any musical scores entered from a musical keyboard 
into the computer's memory.  This gadget may again be clicked to 
notify the computer that your recording is complete.

     PLAYBACK MIDI

          Playback MIDI reproduces any MIDI events previously 
recorded by the program as output to any active MIDI devices 
connected to the Amiga.   You may start playback by selecting the 
PLAYBACK MIDI gadget with your mouse.  To halt playback simply 
select this gadget a second time.


     OPEN

          This function can be found as a menu selection.   Select 
OPEN to retrieve a file containing data previously saved to disk 
by the program.   A file requestor will access the Amiga's disk-
storage filing system allowing you to select the file you wish to 
retrieve from disk.  You may abort the OPEN command by selecting 
the CANCEL button with your mouse.

     SAVE

          This function can be found as a menu selection.  Select 
SAVE to create and store a file that contains all MIDI data 
recorded by the program.  You must supply the file requestor with 
a filename in order to identify the data being recorded to disk.  
You may abort this command by selecting the CANCEL button with 
your mouse.
