WHAT NEXT THEN? *3]5@4 by Jacka / A51 *1]1@6 -/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/ @1 Many people are now buying hard drives and extra memory because newer titles are demanding it to run fast and to remain playable. Through this article I will give you some tips on how to organise your hard drive and some programs which are highly useful. If you only have 1 or 2 meg of chip ram, then it's worth noting to keep the partitions of your drive to a minimum because each partition uses a small chunk of memory (about 15K I think). Anyway, if you don't have much memory then it's essential to keep as much free as possible. With my partitions I use 15M for my Workbench and all of the rest on the other partition which I have named Work. This is usually the standard setup except most partitioning software defaults your WorkBench to 8M. If you are only going to use your drive for storing games on then this is probably the best for you. But users of serious software will most likely need a bigger chunk of space as more libraries and C commands and datatypes. etc. will be installed. Once you have the drive ready and with WB installed, you can now start beginning to put other software on to the drive. Probably the first thing to do is to get a file management utility like Directory Opus, or a PD equivelent like Messy Sid 3 or similar. Unless you are competent with the CLI this will make things much easier for you folk. Next buy yourself a copy of Tools Daemon which any self respected PD library should be able to supply you with. This lets you add pull-down menus to the main WB screen and is excellent so you don't have to go through millions of drawers on your HD. It will also let you make hotkeys for launching programs. It supports anything which has an icon or not. Next up has to be the latest version of a virus checker in the WBStart-Up drawer. My choice here is Virus Z V2 which can be downloaded from the Aminet or again from your local PD company. Always keep this enabled so no shitty ]5Happy New Year]1 viruses can infect your system. Also the checker can sometimes remove the virus from the file and it will still work. The mentioned virus above is an example of this. These are the bare essentials and many more can be added. Please remember to support any shareware titles so the author will continue to support the Amiga with his or her program(s).
