@ALBUM: Misc songs that were transcribed The following is a list of 16 songs that i have been transcribing for some friends of mine and it occurred to me that rec.music.dylan might want to see the results. i begin by writing down each song as i remember it, then comparing the printout to the recorded version. what i dont know about is the copyright problem here. these songs are marked whenever i see them "not to be reprinted without permission" and it would seem that, given his initial horror (or Grossman's) upon the release of the Great White Wonder album, that we could be asking for flames of the non-net variety. LEGEND of what might follow: -B.Dylan = COPYRIGHT BY BOB DYLAN!!! circa.196n : 1963, Another Side Of BD 1964, Bringing It All Back Home 1965, Highway 61 Revisited and 1966, Blonde On Blonde believe it or not i was just about to get this first song for my friends when someone sent in Bruce Springsteen's cover version. Brucey left out 2 verses and cobbled many of the words, but i cant blame him - they dont exactly roll off the tongue. he sang what he did well. @SONG: Chimes of Freedom - Bob Dylan, circa.1963 [as taken off the record, Another Side Of Bob Dylan) Far between sundown's finish and midnight's broken toe We ducked inside the doorway as thunder went crashing As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight; Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight. And for each and every underdog soldier in the night And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing Through the city's melted furnace unexpectedly we watched With faces hidden as the walls were tightening As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowing rain Dissolved into the bells of lightning Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned and forsaked.llin Tolling for the outcasts burning constantly at stakes And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail The sky cracked its forms in naked wonder And the clinking of the churchbells blew far into the breeze Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind And the poet and the painter far behind his rightful time And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing In the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales For the disrobed faceless forms of no position Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts All down in taken-for-granted situations Tolling for the deaf and blind, tolling for the mute For the mistreated mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute For the misdemeanor of law, chained and cheated by pursuit And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing Even though a cloud's white curtain in a far off corner flared And the hypnotic, splattered mist was slowly lifting Electric light still struck like arrows fired but for the ones Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting Tolling for the searching ones on this speechless, seeking trail For the lonesome hearted lovers with too personal a tale. And for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing Starry eyed and laughing as I recall when we were caught Trapped by no track of hours, for they hang suspended As we listened one last time, and we watched with one last look Spellbound and swallowed 'til the tolling ended Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed For the countless, confused, accused, misused strung out ones and worse... And for every hungup person in the whole wide universe And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing @SONG: bob dylan's 115th dream -b.dylan, circa.1964 i was riding on the Mayflower when i thought i spied some land i yelled down to Captain Arab, i'll have ya understand, who came running to the deck and said "Boys! Forget the whale - we're goin' over yonder. Cut the engines. Change the sails." "Haul on that bowline!" we sang that melody, like all tough sailors do when they're far away at sea. "I think i'll call it America." i said as we hit land. I took a deep breath. I fell down, i could not stand. Captain Arab he starting writing out some deeds and said "Lets build us a Fort and start buying the place with beads." Just then a cop come down the street crazy as a loon and throws us all in jail for carryin harpoons. Aw, me, i busted out - dont even ask me how, i went lookin for some help, i walked past a guernsey cow who directed me down to the bowery slums where people carried signs around sayin "BAN THE BUMS!". i jumped right in line, sayin "I hope that i'm not late" when i realized i hadnt eaten for five days straight. i went into a restaurant lookin for the cook - i told him i was the editor of a famous etiquette book. the waiter he was handsome and he wore a powder blue cape. i ordered up some suzette, i said "could you please make that crepe?" just then the whole kitchen exploded from boiling fat - food was flyin everywhere - i left without my hat. i didnt mean to be nosey so i went into a bank to try to get some bail for the boys back in the tank. they asked me for some collateral and i pulled down my pants. they threw me in the alley, when up comes this girl from france who invited me to her place. i went, but she had a friend who knocked me out an' robbed my boots an' was i on the street again. i went up to a big house with a U.S. flag upon display. i said "can you please help me out, i got some friends down the way". The man said "Get out of here or i'll tear you limb from limb." i said "you know, they refused Jesus, too." He said "Your not him. Get out of here before i break your bones. i'm not your pop." I decided to have him arrested and went looking for a cop. i ran back outside and got into a cab i ran out the other door - this english man said "Fab!" as he saw me leap a hotdog stand and a chariot that stood parked across from a build advertising brotherhood. I ran right through the door like a hobo sailor does, but it was just a funeral parlor and the man asked me who i was i repeated that all my friends were in jail, with a sigh. he gave me his card and said "call me if they die." i shook his hand and said goodbye and went back out on the street, when a bowling ball came down the road and knocked me off my feet. A pay phone was ringin - and it just about blew my mind - when i picked it up an' said "hello", this foot came through the line! well about this time i was fed up at trying to make a stab at gettin any help for my friends and Captain Arab. i needed a coin to flip, like eather heads or tails, would let me know if i should go back to ship or back to jail. so i hocked my sailor's suit an' i got a coin to flip. It came up tails, it rhymed with sails, so i made it back to the ship. Well I got back and took the parking ticket off the mast. i was ripping it to shreds when this Coast Guard boat went past. They asked me my name and i said "Captain Kidd". They believed me but they wanted to know exactly what i did. I said "for the pope of Eyruke i was employed" they let me go right away, they were very paranoid. Well the last i heard of Arab he was stuck on the side of a whale that was married to the deputy sheriff of the jail, but the funniest thing was - as i was leavin' the bay - i saw three ships sailing and they were all headed my way. So i asked the Captain what his name was an' how come he didnt drive a truck?? He said his name was Columbus an' i just said "Good Luck..." @SONG: tambourine man - b.dylan, circa.1964 hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me i'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me in the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin you though i know that evening's empire has returned into sand vanished from my hand left me blindly here to stand but still not sleepin my weariness amazes me - i'm branded on my feet i have no one to meet and my ancient empty street's too dead for dreamin hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me i'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me in the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin you take me on a trip upon your magic swirling ship my senses have been stripped my hands cant feel to grip my toes to numb to step wait only for my bootheels to be wanderin i'm ready to go anywhere, i'm ready for to fade into my own parade cast your dancing spell my way i promise to go under it hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me i'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me in the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin you though you might hear laughing, spinning, swinging madly across the sun its not aimed at anyone its just escaping on the run and, but for the sky, there are no fences facin and if you hear vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme to your tambourine in time its just a ragged clown behind i wouldnt pay it any mind its just a shadow your seeing that he's chasing hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me i'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me in the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin you then take me dissappearing through the smoke rings of my mind down the foggy ruins of time far past the frozen leaves the haunted frightened trees out to the windy beach far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free silhouetted by the sea circled by the circus sands with all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves let me forget about today until tomorrow hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me i'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to hey mister tambourine man, play a song for me in the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin you @SONG: The Gates Of Eden B.Dylan circa.1964 Of war and peace the truth just twists, its curfew gull it glides Upon 4-legged forest clouds the cowboy angel rides With his candle lit into the sun, though its glow is waxed in black All except when 'neath the trees of Eden The lampost stands with folded arms, its iron claws attached To curbs 'neath holes where babies wail though it shadows metal badge All in all can only fall with a crashing but meaningless blow No sound ever comes from the gates of Eden This savage soldier sticks his head in sand and then complains Unto the shoeless hunter who's gone deaf but still remains Upon the beach where hounddogs bay at ships with tattooed sails Heading for the gates of Eden With a time-rusted compass blade, Aladdin and his Lamp Sits with utopian hermit monks, side-saddle on the Golden Calf And on their promises of paradise you will not hear a laugh All except inside the gates of Eden Relationships of ownership they whisper in the wings To those condemned to act accordingly and wait for succeeding kings And I try to harmonize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings There are no kings inside the gates of Eden The motorcycle black madonna two-wheeled gypsy queen And her silver studded phantom cause the grey-flanneled dwarf to scream As he weeps, two wicked birds of prey who pick up on his breadcrumbs sins And there are no sins inside the gates of Eden The kingdoms of experience in the precious winds they rot While paupers change possessions - each one wishing for what the other has got And the princess and the prince discuss what's real and what is not It doesnt matter inside the gates of Eden The foreign sun it squints upon a bed that is never mine As friends and other strangers from their fates try to resign Leaving men wholly totally free to do anything they wish to do but die And there are no trials inside the gates of Eden At dawn my lover comes to me and tells me of her dreams With no attempts to shovel the glimpse into the ditch of what each one means At times I think there are no words but these to tell what's true And there are no truths outside the gates of Eden @SONG: Its Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleedin' - B. Dylan, circa.1964 Darkness at the break of noon shadows even the silver spoon The hand made blade, the child's balloon eclipses both the sun and moon To understand you know too soon there is no sense in trying Pointed threats they bluff with scorn, suicide remarks are torn From the fool's gold mouthpiece, the hollow horn Plays wasted words, proves to warn That he not busy being born is busy dying Temptation's page flies out the door, you follow, find yourself at war Watch waterfalls of pity roar, you feel to moan but unlike before You discover that you' just be one more person crying So don't fear if you hear a foreign sound to your ear It's alright ma, I'm only sighing As some warn victory, some downfall, private reasons great or small Can be seen in the eyes of those that call To make all that should be killed to crawl While others say don't hate nothing at all except hatred Disillusioned words like bullets bark as human gods aim for their mark Make everything from toy guns that spark To flesh coloured Christs that glow in the dark It's easy to see without looking too far that not much is really sacred While preachers preach of evil fates teachers teach that knowledge waits Can lead to hundred dollar plates, goodness hides behind its gates But even the president of the United States Sometimes must have to stand naked And though the rules of the road have been lodged It's only people's games that you've got to dodge And it's alright ma, I can make it Advertising signs that con you into thinking you're the one That can do what's never been done, that can win what's never been won Meantime life outside goes on all around you You lose yourself, you reappear you suddenly find you've got nothing to fear Alone you stand with nobody near when a trembling distant voice unclear Startles your sleeping ears to hear That somebody thinks they really found you A question in your nerves is lit yet you know there is no answer fit To satisfy, ensure you not to quit To keep it in your mind and not forget That it is not he or she or them or it that you belong to Although the masters make the rules for the wise men and the fools I've got nothing, ma, to live up to For them that must obey authority that they do not respect in any degree Who despise their jobs, their destinies Speak jealously of them that are free Cultivate their flowers to be nothing more than something they invest in While some unprinciples baptize too strict party platform ties Social clubs in drag disguise, outsiders they can freely criticize Tell nothing except who to idolize and say 'God bless him' While one who sings with his tongue on fire Gargles in the rat race choir Bent out of shape from society's pliers, cares not to come up any higher But rather get you down in the hole that he's in But I mean no harm nor put fault on anyone that lives in a vault But it's alright, ma, if I can't please him Old lady judges watch people in pairs, limited in sex they dare To push fake morals, insultant stares While money doesn't talk, it swears Obscenity, who really cares, propaganda all is phony While them that defend what they cannot see With a killer's pride, security It blows the mind most bitterly for them that think death's honesty Won't fall upon them naturally life sometimes must get lonely My eyes collide head on with stuffed graveyards, false goals, I scuff At pettiness which plays so rough, walk upside down inside handcuffs Kick my legs to crash it off, say OK I've had enough What else can you show me And if my thought dreams could be seen They'd probably put my head in a guillotine But it's alright ma, it's life and life only @SONG: its all over now, baby blue -b.dylan, circa.1964 you must leave now - you better spit out your gum" she screamed and her face got so red then she fell on the floor and i covered her up and then thought i'll go look through her drawer and when i was through i filled up my shoe and brought it to you and you, you took me in, you loved me then, you, you never wasted time and i, i never took much i never asked for your crutch now dont ask for mine ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- thats all for now, folks mac the finger (finally back from highway 61) p.s. -
