$aff|2-Millennium $9f0|2-Buggery $fbd By Daniel Thornton AKA T0ffee B0y $fbdYou might have heard of the millenium bug. Basically it means that any computers that don`t have a four figure year field will give up the ghost in the year 2000, as they will believe that it is 1900. Be scared. Be very scared. You see, the problem is A LOT bigger than you think. On January 1st 2000, the planet could come to a standstill. The following information is taken from a respected American computer technician`s replies to questions from James Whale on Talk Radio. You might think that the millenium bug is a piffling little thing that needs only a rudimentary knowledge of programming to correct, but you`d be wrong. Of course you can correct software relatively easily, but what if the computer hardware itself can`t accept the 2000 date field? Easy answer...IT WON`T WORK! Imagine....banks could lose record of all cash in your account (empty your account before Christmas!!!!)...Computers on airplanes could crash possibly leading to disasters of enormous proportions. Airlines are taking it so seriously that even big ones such as KLM are not going to be flying for the 24 hour period. Medical records could be lost, life support machines will switch off, social security will be in a complete mess. In Eastern countries, where they use ancient computers, they are unlikely to update their systems, meaning the computers could release nuclear warheads! The worst thing is, very few people have done anything about correcting it! In America, they started the process of updating social security computers some years ago, and are only a third of the way through. In the UK, we are only still evaluating what needs doing! How can a disaster of this scale been allowed to occur? Why is the government not doing more to warn people? It is essential that you get your computer checked if you do not use an Amiga (they have always had four figure years). But whatever you do, don`t try changing the date to Dec31 1999 at 23:59 hrs, as your computer may crash and refuse to reboot!
