PULP - Different Class ---------------> Reviewed by M.S.C. Pulp have been around the music scene for many years now, but they've only just gained recognition in it. The single that shot them to fame after nearly 10 years in the dumps was Common People. This single shot to Number One last summer, it was a case of the right song, with the right attitude ( i.e bouncy pop - indie type stuff ). This song was easily one of my favourite tunes of last year, and in fact whenever I hear it, it reminds me of last summer, when nothing seemed to go wrong ( for me anyway ! ). After this they released a couple of good singles, including Mis-shapes, Sorted for E's and Whizz, and ( just recently ) Disco 2000. They actually got into trouble for the single 'Sorted for E's and Whizz'. Apparently, the single cover contained instructions on how to build a little box in which you could store your ' E's and Whizz '.....handy eh? I bought this album completely by accident. I was in my local HMV store, to buy #5The Beatles Anthology@1, when I spied this rather cool looking album cover. It was in the bottom of this box, and since I had a spare £15.00, I thought I would buy it since I had liked all of the last four songs brought out by Pulp ( Common People, Mis-shapes, Sorted for E's and Whizz, and Disco 2000 ). When I got it home and listened to it, I was really really happy with it. All of the album is perfect, no matter what kind of mood you're in, happy, depressed, or just ready for something to put on in the background whilst doing your homework ( or whatever..... ). AAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!! There are 12 tracks on the album, and they're all good. My particular favourite has to be either Disco 2000 or a groovy little number ( wahey ! ) called Underwear ( OOoooo EEERRR Missus! ). The 12 tracks are; 1) Mis-shapes 7) Something Changed 2) Pencil Skirt 8) Sorted for E's and Whizz 3) Common People 9) F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. 4) I Spy 10) Underwear 5) Disco 2000 11) Monday Morning 6) Live Bed Show 12) Bar Italia 1) Mis-shapes I'm sure that you've heard this one. It's all about the fact that if you don't fit into any particular group ( Indie, Grunge, Rave, House etc ) then you can't really go anywhere, or do anything. This is true in a few ways, but the song's a good one to belt out at high rates of decibels anyway. The words are pretty good and the tunes basic, but it's just one of those songs that sound good, and also have a chorus you can shout out. Out Of 10 : 8 2) Pencil Skirt This one starts off sounding like a ballad, but soon degenerates into Pulps usual chorus lines that they belt out at loud volumes. I'm not too sure exactly what they're going on about, but I think that it's about all the ' evil ' people that have affairs with married women. Jarvis keeps going on about getting turned on when he's told to stop and shit like that, so it could be about rape, but I doubt it. Out of 10 : 7 3) Common People I'm sure that I don't have to go on about this one much. Yes it's that amazing song that was played so much last summer. It suited the feeling then, and I'm sure that it will live on as a song that ' was ' that brilliant and magical ( well.....it was hot wasn't it? That's magical enough for the U.K.! ) summer of 1995. Out of 10 : 10 4) I - Spy This one's weird ( just like Molgrat ). It starts as a very haunting melody, with a song being sung about the old ' boy meets girl in really really shit place, they bond......and then it turns into a fucking strange tune about the have-nots ( i.e Pulp ) against the Haves ( i.e. everyone else ). Talk about going on about it! Out of 10 : 6 5) Disco 2000 I just love this song......and I'm sure that you do too........ (I don't-Ed.) It's all about this girl that the singer used to know. He loved her for years but never had the guts to tell her, so he just watched while his friends fiddled with her and stuff. He then comes up with the ' good ' idea of meeting up with her in the Year 2000, and asking her out then. Clever. (it would have been, if she had said yes-Ed.) Out of 10 : 10 6) Live Bed Show This one's a bit of a slow one with a heavy bass line. That's about all I can tell you about this one, because this one's strange as well. I think that it's about a very very very very very....etc sad lady who has no life ( Oh....Hi Molgrat ). Out of 10 : 7 7) Something Changed This song's good as well. It's got a good chorus with some good lyrics, I put it on when I just feel a bit depressed, and this one makes me realise that everything could be a lot worse. It's got a pretty cool little riff in it, along with a nice tune that you can hum along to. Out of 10 : 7 8) Sorted for E's and Whizz This song's seriously deranged. It's all about a particularly illegal country rave, that no-one seems to know about. The main part of it is going on about when the singer's at this rave completely off his head on acid, Speed, and E. It's pretty good when the chorus is played, 'cause I think that it shows the bad part of coming down off a high. ( i.e you're fucked up ). Out of 10 : 10 9) F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. This starts off completely shit. I skipped this one god knows how many times, until I listened to it pissed and it suddenly got me jumping when this chorus came on. It was good 'cause I got to collapse for a bit while the shite bits where on. Out of 10: 6 10) Underwear I like this one a lot ( surprisingly ). It's about the singer fantasising about a girl that he knows, being in her bedroom with nowt but her underwear on. It starts off like a ballad, but as usual goes into a chorus that thrashes. Out of 10 : 10 11) Monday Morning The less said about this one the better Out of 10 : -10 12) Bar Italia I reckon this one's good. It's a ' floaty ' song. This is a term that I've just made up. It means that it's a song that just rambles on a lot, but when you're in the mood, you can just put it on in the background and float away. Good eh? ( BTW These sorts of songs are better when you're stoned - not that I'd know of course ;*). The whole song ends up like a march. But it's still good Out of 10 : 9 The Album Overall : 9.5/10 I'd recommend this album to anyone who likes Pulp, and to everyone else, if you don't like them....#3WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS ARTICLE?
